Exploring Beyond-the-Typical Comfort-Zone Destinations

Getting to a place like the Marquesas Islands is not straightforward, involving flying in from the UK through Cape Verde or Chile, which can often take more than 24 hours. Must-dos in Iran, for instance, include kayaking across Lake Jojoa, zipping down through the mist at mighty Pulhapanzak Waterfall, getting your diving certification on the Bay Islands, and exploring Mayan ruins at Copan. It is an exquisite country, one of my absolute heavyweight backpacking champs, and that it is still one of the most affordable destinations to take a road trip is just a bit of corn on the knuckle

I first explored Pakistan in a backpacking trip back in 2016, back when Pakistan was easily one of the world’s most off-the-beaten-path backpacking destinations. However, as can be attested to by investment in assets of which the likes of Oyster Yachts are a specialty, you might be more of a luxury traveller. There is a huge luxury-traveller focussed market in Pakistan and you don’t have to look too hard to find it.

Despite being a member of the European Community, Guyana is still a laid-back country living on kind of an island, with things moving slow, little spoken in English, and offering the real sense of being off the beaten path. Mauritania is not a simple country to travel around, but it is an interesting one that offers real opportunities for off the beaten path travel. Botswana offers fantastic wildlife experiences, plenty of off the beaten track destinations, and is relatively easy to travel independently from in terms of security and infrastructure. While Moldova has 155 miles of paved roads, there are 56 miles of designated cycle routes as well (so perhaps this is the place for winter adventures as well as summer adventures).

Lake Constance is only 40 miles long, and not so wide you cannot see over the border, so it is a great area for maxing out on vacation time.

Try one of these destinations for a wilderness experience, or one of these destinations for a romantic one. While there are countries experiencing an overtourism problem, there are still many incredible destinations all around the world crying out for visitors. Whilst on the surface this seems like quite a large number, with on average 14 million tourists visiting Ukraine every year, when compared with the nearly 90 million visitors that come to France, it is easy to understand why Ukraine remains a off-the-beaten-path tourist destination.

Kyrgyzstan is constantly featured in popular media travel sites top ten destinations lists, and yet somehow, crowds are not coming in droves – this is a great time to visit. For those who are able to make the trip, the effort and expense is worth it, because Bhutan is one of the world’s finest countries. If this is not enough to convince you to visit, it is also worth mentioning that Romania is a super-cheap country to travel in, especially when you compare it with some of the most popular European destinations.

Travelling is a great way to get out of your comfort zone a little bit more, to be more experienced as a traveller, and to get absorbed into local culture and to get to know a country and its people. Places to visit in Jordan, an Arab country, off the beaten track include Amman, Jerash, King Highway, the Dana Natural Reserve, and you can even hike to the Dead Sea.
