Tessa Dare, & ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE

Setting: Regency England
Subgenre: Historical romance
Hero: Spencer Dumarque, the Duke of Morland
Heroine: Lady Amelia d’Orsay

firstsigning 262x300 Guest Author, Tessa Dare & Giveaway!!

One sentence summary:
When a plain, impoverished spinster demands a handsome duke’s midnight dance, she never suspects she’ll be entertaining his steamy proposal of marriage by dawn.

Scene you like most and would never cut: The scene where Spencer and Amelia argue, just before they go to bed for the first time. It starts in the stables, continues in the kitchen, and continues up to the bedroom suite. I loved writing that scene so much, because I got to work in sexy banter, a bit of action, and passionate emotions coming to the surface… all my favorite things to write.

Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying:
“I’m afraid I have no food in the house to serve you.” (Amelia is the consummate hostess, and she takes both pride and delight in offering hospitality.)

What is your heroine’s occupation, or if unemployed, what should she be doing: Amelia is an unmarried lady (read: spinster) from a noble, yet impoverished family—and since her parents’ death, she’s been the matriarchal figure of the family, being the only female child of six. In general, she’s a nurturer and likes to take care of others.

What is your hero’s occupation, or if unemployed, what should he be doing: Spencer is a duke, and that is an occupation in and of itself. However, he also owns one of the finest (he would, of course, say THE finest) stud farms in England. He was the son of an Army officer, raised in Canada. He only came to England and became the duke after his uncle died without sons, so Spencer’s never felt comfortable in London society. He’d far rather be in the horse barn. Failing that, you’d find him at the card tables, because he’s freakishly good at cards.

What you think readers will like best about this book:
The characters, I hope. Both Amelia and Spencer are complex people with flaws and problems—but I just loved spending time with them, writing their journey to mutual understanding and true love. Also, this is probably my hottest book yet. J

The person that readers want you to write about but you haven’t yet:

Claudia, Spencer’s teenage ward, has a small but pivotal part in this book. And after I shared the draft with several friends, they all wanted to know more about what would happen to her. So I ended up giving her a part in the third book, too.

What’s next:
The next Stud Club book, TWICE TEMPTED BY A ROGUE, releases June 22. The hero, Rhys St. Maur, is a returning war hero who’s recently inherited his father’s title. Rhys has been through a lot. He’s definitely my most tortured hero to date, and his story was gut-wrenching at times to write. But I just adored discovering his tender side along with his heroine, Meredith.

It’s summer! Every summer, Amelia and her family go to their beloved ancestral cottage on the banks of the River Wye. Tell me about your vacation plans. Going anywhere special? If not, where would your dream trip take you?

GIVEAWAY - a signed copy of ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE to a random commenter, and so you can have Spencer and Amelia’s company on the plane, train, or beach. J

It’s less than a month until One Dance with a Duke hits the shelves! So far, the book is garnering great reviews, including a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly and a Top Pick! from RT Book Reviews magazine.

“An engaging love story with strong, believable characters.
I can’t wait to read the sequels!”
~Mary Balogh, New York Times bestselling author

True temptation begins at midnight…

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members — yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke — until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

No vacation plans. But I am temporarily living in San Francisco.

  • Scorpio M.

Wish I could spend the summer in Cali but looks like staying local is the deal this year. Would love to read your book! “Stud Club” love it!

  • Booklover1335

Yeah, no vacation for me this summer :( But if I could have a dream vacation it would be a month long trip to Great Britain and Ireland (England, Scotland…) better yet, since I’m dreaming let’s make it for the entire summer…three glorious months :)

Congrats on the new series, and absolutely loved the video!

  • Lisa G.

Congrats on your new release! I have no big plans this year, money is tight. :-(

  • LilMissMolly

Hi Tessa! Me and my daughter loved your last trilogy and I’m sure this one will be just as nice!
Since my husband got laid off in February, our plans to vacation in Maine this year took a back seat. :( He’s currently working part time, but still no funds for vacation. If I had a choice of anywhere in the world though, I’d go to Ireland. No question.
Please enter my name for the contest, as I’d love to read it!

  • PhyllisC

These books are on my TBB list. I can’t wait to read them. The historical genre is my favorite.

As for a vacation, I hope to spend a few days at the beach. My dream vacation would be a trip to England and Scotland.

  • Jeanette Juan

I’m not going anywhere for vacation but my dream vacation would be to go to Japan!

  • Kirsten

I’m not going on a vacation so I think I’ll be spending some time in my garden. Getting rid of weeds and drinking tea, reading a good book or two or three. The simple things really. If I could go on a vacation, I would LOVE to go to Scotland. Nature is so wild and beautiful there, I know cause I saw it on TV. Would be great to see it in person.

Loved your first series and think this one will be awesome too.

  • amanda

my mini vacation is to RomCon and a one day camping excursion. lol

  • Kaetrin

Congratulations on your new books Tessa.

As for vacations, anywhere where there’s sun and a body of water is good for me!

  • Julie

We’re probably going up to Canada to visit family again…we go every other year or so, and we just got a couple of new additions to the family, so my mom is just raring to go and play devoted auntie, haha.

Aside from that, I’d love to just stay home and sleep, to tell you the truth.

  • Tessa Dare

Wow, the day really got away from me, once the kids were home. Sorry I couldn’t keep up with all the messages individually, but thank you all so much stopping by and sharing your vacation plans, whether real or fantasy!

And Sue, thanks so much for inviting me to be a guest at Borders!

  • iokijo

This past week, I spent 3 days at the beach, which is really all one can ask for out of a summer!

  • Deerdoe69

For the last two years we have vacationed at Disney World. This year we are staying home and doing local entertainment stuffs. Me and my husband both stare longingly at the TV though when a Disney commercial comes on. I think we enjoyed the trips more than our children.

  • Lois M.

Hiya! :) Can’t wait for all three books! :) Me. . . well, it’ll be a miracle if we go on a day trip somewhere outside our 20 or so mile radius at this point. . . but as long as we end up at bookstores, don’t mind. ;) My dream places - England, probably for obvious reasons LOL, Egypt, Paris, back to Disney World (last time - 1990!), and maybe back to NYC. :)

    Hi Tessa,

I am looking forward to reading One Dance! As for summer plans, we are having a foreign exchange student (girl) come & stay with us for 3 weeks in July so I am sure we will travel around CA a bit. Otherwise, no big plans. Probably come down & visit family in So Cal. I am getting a new cell phone - the HTC Incredible. I can tweet/FB on there about all the great books I read! LOL

  • etirv

No vacation plans yet but Vegas is always a nice escape. Tessa, I’m looking forward to your new trilogy!

  • Amy P.

    Vacation . . . I wish . . .

It looks like this summer I’ll be spending most my time with the kids on the sports field, BUT if I had a week to myself I would love to visit central/coast California. Napa, vineyards, wine tasting (or all three) in a bed and breakfast just cruising up the coast. And, of course, a couple of good books in my bag!

  • Jane C

Congrats on the new and upcoming releases, Tessa. No plans right now, but I would love to visit Egypt or Italy.

  • Cynthia N.

This trilogy sounds wonderful and I am very curious about the midnight dance.

No special plans for a summer vacation. We’re hoping for some type of getaway though.

Dream vacation? Hmmm. Any vacation I didn’t have to pay for!! LOL!

  • chey

    Hi,
I like the sound of this book!
I have no vacation plans this year. My dream vacation would be to Australia.

  • Estella

    No vacation plans this year.
My dream vacation would be the island of Maui.

  • Tracey D

I have no vacation plans this year; I started a new job and don’t have enough leave accrued, yet.

But my dream vacation is someplace exotic with a private beach and servants!

  • Jennifer Turner

I have no plans yet but we usually go to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. If I had unlimited money, I would be on my way to Australia or anywhere in Europe, especially Italy.

  • Jen X

Hi Tessa, I just came back from a 2-weeker in sunny California, San Fran & LA. It was great, ate well, got sun, toured museums & hung out with good friends. Summer came a bit early for me :)

  • Jennifer D.

The book sounds like a fun read. I’m going to Vegas for a girls’ weekend with a good friend from High School. I can’t wait to hit the spa and sun by the pool! Congrats on the new trilogy.

  • Kim

Congratulations on the new series. I have no vacation plans. My dream trip is anywhere that combines history and sight-seeing. I dislike just sitting around a pool or beach. I would rather tour historical buildings or visit famous sites.

  • Jacqueline C.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any amazing summer plans. If I were going on my dream trip though, it would be to spend two weeks in Greece and Italy.

    • Tessa Dare

Wow, Greece and Italy sounds like a wonderful vacation indeed. I love art and nature, so my favorite vacations (even day trips) are ones where I can be in the presence of both. In Greece and Italy, you can’t turn around without being in the presence of both!

  • Karyn Gerrard

    Tessa,

Never had a debut author grabbed my attention like you did last year with your debut trilogy books, my fav of the three? “Surrender of a Siren”.
I am sooooo looking forward to your next group of books.
Summer vacation will be New England and the Maritime provinces of Canada (where I am originally from) and how cool your hero was raised in Canada, love that!
All the best for your release!

    • Tessa Dare

Thank you so much, Karyn! I’m so glad you loved SIREN. I loved writing it. (sigh, I miss Gray. And Sophia. And Davy. And Joss.)

I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from Canadians about Spencer’s heritage! I wanted him to have a wilder, rugged upbringing. But if I’d had him born in the US, he wouldn’t have been able to inherit his English title, since this is post-Revolution. So Canada it was, and it really did fit his character (I thought).

  • Barbara Elness

I’m not going to be able to take a vacation this year due to being unemployed at the moment. My dream vacation would be to tour the Great Britain and see all of the fabulous places I’ve read about for years. I’d settle for being able to go visit my sister in California for a week if I had to scale down my big dreams.

    • Tessa Dare

Barbara, I suspect a lot of us are doing armchair traveling this year, due to the economy. I love to read travel guides, even if I never go to the countries. Also, I love books that can take me on a virtual vacation — Nora Roberts’ books set in Ireland totally do that for me.

  • Pam Hopkins

Welsh names in Devonshire? Well, why not?! The Bristol Channel is not so very wide, and Cornwall (with it’s Celtic language) is right there!:D

  • Virginia C

Hi, Tessa! Congratulations on your “Stud Club” series and the release of “One Dance With a Duke”! I love your description of “the scene you would never cut”! I am also quite intriqued by Rhys St. Maur and “Twice Tempted by a Rogue!

I would love to have the time, money, and a darn good road vehicle and travel throughout the United States. Being of Scottish descent, I’ve also always wanted to visit Bonny Scotland. However, middle-aged wanderlust has recently set in, and my imagination is becoming quite adept at planning foreign flights of fancy! I am now dreaming of sojourning in Paris and rusticating in Tuscany. Absorbing and savoring the food, wine, art, culture, literature and language of societies touched by Old World allure.

  • Tessa Dare

Oh, look! GSM is actually going to Scotland! I would love for you to take Amelia and Spencer with you, too. :) One of Spencer’s estates is actually in Scotland, but by his own admission, he almost never travels there. You could totally rectify that situation.

Pam, thanks for coming by! It’s so funny you should mention Rhys’s Welsh name. I originally meant to set his book in Wales. But for one reason and another, I couldn’t make the setting work, so I ended up switching to Devonshire. But by that time, I was so used to thinking of the characters as Rhys and Meredith, I couldn’t bring myself to change the names! So they are Welsh-sounding characters in Devonshire. *shrug*

KarenH — wow, that fantasy trip sounds AMAZING. And I am working on the pirate ship and robot. We’ll see…

Anna - Ooh, Australia would be a wonderful vacation. I hope I get to go there someday, too.

Cories - have fun at your brother’s wedding! (I must say, Amelia would not approve of starving yourself in preparation, however. For that matter, neither would Spencer. *wink*)

  • runner10

We just spent a week in Key West. It was wonderful. I would love to spend a month there.

  • Nina

Hey! I am a huge fan! I love your books. Can’t wait for your new two books to be released. Thanks for writing awesome books.

  • Tessa Dare

    Hey, I’m back!

Sue, thank you SO much for that wonderful recommendation! I’m so glad you enjoyed both Spencer and Amelia. That means a lot.

Carol L, I too would *love* to go to Scotland. I’m trying to work a research trip in this summer, to England, but I doubt I’ll make it that far north. Some other time!

Kwana, thank you. Hope you enjoy it!

Rita, thanks for putting my books on your list! And your vacation sounds like paradise. I may borrow that fantasy. :)

Hi, quilt lady! Another would-be Scotland adventurer, huzzah!

Danielle, camping IS a big vacation! At least, a labor-intensive one. We really should take the darelings camping this year, but just thinking about the preparation wears me out. It seemed easier when no kids were involved - just throw a tent and sleeping bags in the car and go.

  • GSM

I’m going to Scotland next month, and I’d love to take Ammelia and Spencer with me! Tessa, I almost never watch book trailers, but I saw yours. I love it. You are so clever! But I was wondering, do your kids know what you do with their toys when they’re gone during the day?

  • Karen H

I loved that book trailer! But it would have been really cool if it had included a pirate and a transformer…

No special plans this summer but my dream trip has always been (note mention of no longer existing technology to give you an idea of how long “always” is): Concorde to Paris, Orient Express to Istanbul, Mediterranean cruise to Rome, Orient Express to London (or Paris if it doesn’t go there and take the Chunnel to London), then the Queen Elizabeth II back to USA.

  • Pam Hopkins

I, too, came over by way of Teresa Medeiros — and now I’m intrigued! *adds to wish list*

Also, let me add that “Rhys” is my favorite Welsh name, so I’ll be keeping my eyes open for him on the 22nd!

This summer my daughter (aged 13) and I will have our yearly kayaking weekend in Maine, then in August we’ll head to Baton Rouge to visit my best friend/daughter’s godmother. We’ll share books (must email her this link, actually!), tea, laughter, tears, and love up our kids.

  • Anna Shah Hoque

I don’t have any special plans for this summer. I’ll be staying in town…going to as many book sales as possible…Summer is when a lot of places have fund-raising functions so oodles of used books out there for me to find.

If money was no issue, then I would go to Australia and New Zealand for a long holiday. I’d stay in really awesome B&B’s along the way and just take in the sights as well as do some major shopping.

  • cories

Hi! This is the best book trailer ever! And I want to know more about Claudia, too.

As for my summer plans, I’m going to attend my brother’s wedding in August which necessitates my losing about 10 pounds by then as he is going to marry one of those short, skinny Asian women, next to whom I’d look like a ginormous cow. I guess I can give up chocolate and baked goods until after the wedding. :)

  • sue

Hi everyone! Thanks Tessa for being here today — ladies — one click away from buying this awesome book!
    http://bit.ly/aI55Nk

& I can say that because I just finished ONE DANCE WITH A DUKE last night — Spencer our Duke of Midnight, turns out to be the most romantic man alive — & Amelia is what every heroine should be — not perfect, but as you get to know her, you’ll want her to be your best friend so you can see why Spencer wants her as his lover.

Tessa, this is, may I say, even better than your last series — I can’t wait for the rest of the studs. Great emotion in bk 1 & sounds like Rhys is going to be just as much fun!

    Thanks for your great books!
    Sue

  • Quilt Lady

I love Tessa’s books! I really want to read this one! We don’t take vacations anymore, lack of funds, but if I could go any where I wanted to it would be to Scotland!

  • HistoricalRomancejunkie Rita

So excited about the stud club trilogy! All the books sound amazingly entertaining! Twice tempted is on my Anticipated Releases list and next month, so will Three Nights… I feel like a fraud, calling my self a HRjunkie but never comeing across your books until now. Wishing you much success! Awesome youtube video, btw!

-My idea of the perfect vacation is somewhere secluded, away from all the other tourist; near a beach (with a pool conveniently located at the back of the hotel; I am nobody’s shark bait!). Being around the people I love (preferably in small doses) ,eating wonderful new cuisine, doing something daring like sky diving or deep sea fishing (yea, i live life on the edge) and then, relaxing one night and curling up with a good book while taking in the scenery.

  • Kwana

This Is my favorite trailer ever. I just love Tessa’s writing and know this will be another great one.

  • Danielle Yockman

No big plans yet. Just the annual camping trip, which DH get’s testy if I bring a book. LOL! But I do have big plans for lots of lounging by the pool at home. Good reading time! And, since I adore you and your books (you really are so sweet!) I must have all three of the new series! I can’t wait. Buying this one soon if I don’t win it here!

  • Carol L

oops, forgot about vacation plans. :) I really have only day trips planned for the shore this summer. But if I could have a dream vacation it would be a trip to Scotland . Such a romantic country and filled with a lot of sadness as well.

Good morning, everyone! Sue, thanks so much for having me here today.

Deb, it’s great to see you here! I definitely remember you living in Iowa. I don’t remember ever going to that particular park, but we might have. Thanks so much for reading ODwaD. I’m glad you’re enjoying it so far, and glad you’re looking forward to Julian and Lily’s story.

SINn, thanks for your kind words about GODDESS! Being called an ‘autobuy’ is the highest compliment. Your ideal vacation sounds lovely - just relaxing in the outdoors with family.

Hi, Laurie! Thanks for your interest in my books. Sounds like you live in a vacation destination already! I have family from Wisconsin and spent many happy vacations there myself. But do you have lots of mosquitoes? eek

Kristin S - thank you so much, that is high praise indeed. Yay for RomCon! I’m not going this year, but I have some friends who are…maybe next year.

Kandace, Teresa Medeiros is such a sweetheart, isn’t she? And an amazing writer. I had to pinch myself when she tweeted about me.

I’ll be back later, after I get the darelings off to school!

  • Kandace

I would Love to win since I’ve been looking forward to the release. I haven’t read anything by Tessa Dare yet but @teresamedeiros recommended I check out her books. When I went to the website I thought it sounded good.

  • Kristin S.

Even though Tessa Dare is a newish author, she is remarkably consistent. Historicals aren’t my top sub-genre, but I know Dare will provide a good read.

As far as vacations, I get to go RomCon! I’ve never been to the middle of the country and RomCon will be my first time as an actual attendee of a romance convention. So psyched!

  • Laurie G

    Tessa,

I haven’t read any of your books yet. I did enjoy your interview and the summary of the book One dance With a Duke. Amelia and Spencer’s story.

I summer in central Wisconsin on a small, spring fed, CHILLY lake. It’s so beautiful at night when the sun sets!

I do get to swim, canoe, bike ride and read books. It’s a perfect get away!

  • SiNn

Tessa ! I loveddd Goddess of the Hunt! was awesome and I like Deb have you on my auto buy list ur work rocks!

Honestly id ont do much durring the summer or have any thing planned but my ideal trip

is taken the back roads in an RV or on foot with my fiance and our boys cmaping outs ide under the stars enjoying great company and the beauty of the outside

  • Deb

Tessa, congrats on your new trilogy! You are on my autobuy list. I’m in the middle of ODWAD right now and have loved every minute of it so far. Amelia is spunky and just the one to take some of that starch out of Spencer! I’m glad to see Julian gets his own story with Lily in the third book.

My sisters, our mom, and I have a weekend every summer when we go to a B and B. But, our family ( 15 of us)getaway is usually in late October or early November when we rent cabins at Backbone State Park. Yep, in Iowa. You and I “talked” once about you living in Wmsburg and I live in V, 20 minutes west of there. :) You don’t have to enter me in the contest since I have the book already.
