The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker
HOT OFF THE PRESS!! —- Press Release - As seen on Publishers’ Marketplace:
Report of Option Agreement Sale:
“Musical stage rights to Leanna Renee Hieber’s, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker described as a Victorian “Ghostbusters” about an eerie young woman whose skin is white as snow and the cadre of characters who believe she may be the key to an ancient prophecy, sold to Mt. Clair Entertainment to be adapted by the author with music and lyrics by Kenny Seymour, Jim Abbott and Nicholas Roman Lewis.”
Further press details on the option agreement, care of Mt. Clair Entertainment:
“The ghostly, Gothic Victorian Fantasy The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker is heading for the legit musical stage. The author Leanna Renee Hieber will write the book of the musical with music and lyrics by Kenny Seymour (Broadway credits include music direction for Memphis and arrangements for The Wiz) and Nicholas Roman Lewis (creative development for The Alchemist and They Call Me La Lupe) with additional orchestrations and arrangements by Jim Abbott (Wicked, Bombay Dreams, Disney’s Tarzan).”
From Nicholas Roman Lewis:
“Kenny and I had been looking for a musical project for at least two years. Leanna’s book had enthralled me from the moment I first read it as a manuscript so it was literally always on my desk staring at me. I knew this would make a wonderful musical but perhaps slightly daunting, after all, the book is full of ghosts, magic and murder. And then I thought, “the book is full of ghosts, magic and murder…this MUST be a musical.” The characters and epic nature of the story lend themselves to song and I knew that Kenny shared my desire to incorporate sweeping cinematic themes with traditional musical theater styles. The icing on the cake is I think every writers dream; a lead character white as snow and strangely beautiful….I think I hear a song.”
Setting:
Grim, gorgeous, ghostly Victorian England, 1888; on the grounds of the formidable Athens Academy, the impressive Rychman Estate, and surrounding environs- such as the threshold of life and death.
Subgenre:
Gothic Fantasy Paranormal Romance
Hero:
Professor Alexi Rychman, the powerful, striking, brooding, enigmatic leader of The Guard who, unbeknownst to Victorian London, polices the restless spectres of the city.
Heroine:
Miss Persephone (Percy) Parker. Sweet and timid yet fiercely passionate when it comes to those she loves. An eerie, ghost-pale visionary, she is as white as the ghosts with whom she alone can see and converse and is only beginning to understand her powers and place in the Prophecy of The Guard.

One sentence summary:
Learning the truth of her mythic past is only the beginning, for young Percy Parker’s destiny is to defend both the world and her true love from the gathering undead minions of Darkness.
Scene you like most and would never cut:
The wedding / honeymoon and the scenes where Alexi and Percy begin making a home together. They are such different personalities and their sweet, romantic dynamic has been such a joy to develop.
Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying:
Considering any other man but Alexi. No other man exists. He makes the moon rise in her sky.
What celebrity is your hero like:
Alan Rickman
What celebrity is your heroine like:
The new Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
What is your heroine’s occupation, or if unemployed, what should she be doing:
Newly appointed staff at Athens Academy; literary translation department. Ah yes, and saviour of the known world.
What is your hero’s occupation, or if unemployed, what should he be doing:
Professor of Mathematical and Alchemical studies at Athens Academy and leader of The Guard of spectral police.
What you think readers will like best about this book:
The tender, sensual passion between Percy and Alexi as they confront mythic, fierce supernatural danger; building to all-out spectral war on the grounds of Athens Academy. Timid Percy comes fully and into her own, and the irascible, compelling Alexi becomes even more difficult and wonderful. It’s an intimate and epic fantastical book; each element stronger for the other.
The person that readers want you to write about but you haven’t yet:
Lord Elijah Withersby and Josephine Belledoux. I’m hoping they’ll get a novella like two other members of the Guard; Headmistress Thompson and Vicar Michael Carroll.
What’s next:
Headmistress Thompson and Vicar Michael Carroll get their due! I have the opportunity to explore their relationship more in upcoming Strangely Beautiful # 2.5, a series novella featured in Dorchester’s A MIDWINTER FANTASY Christmas anthology (releasing this October).
Thanks Sue and Borders for being such a wonderful home for Romance! Blessings to you, dear readers, please keep in touch via http://www.leannareneehieber.com, on Facebook: http://tinyurl.com/sbsfan and Twitter http://www.twitter.com/leannarenee where I’ll be doing updates and plenty of contests!

Since all my current favorite couples in series have already been mentioned I’d thought I’d pull out one from the past, Steve and Ginny from Rosemary Rogers’ books. I’ve never seen an author put one couple through so much.
I’d love a chance to read The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.
April 23rd, 2010 on 3:18 am
I have not started this series yet, so if chosen, I would like The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker. Both books sound great.
April 22nd, 2010 on 2:06 am
I love revisiting couples that I love. I like to watch the evolution of their relationship. Some of my favorites are Elena and Clay from Kelley Armstrong’s books, perennial favorites Eve and Roarke, and I’m also digging Elena and Raphael from the new Singh series.
I’d love to read The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker which is currently sitting at the top of my wish list!
April 22nd, 2010 on 12:45 am
I do enjoy revisiting couples that I love, like Gemma and Kartik from Libba Bray’s A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy. Also, I was captivated by Percy and Alexi in the first book, so I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next. That being said, I would love to get Darkly Luminous.
Also, congratulations on the musical! How exciting!

Some of my favourite couples are Kate & Curran from Ilona Andrews, Sookie & Bill from Charlaine Harris, Barrons and Mac from KMMoning & Cassie and Mircea and/or Pritkin in the Cassie Palmer series
I used to love the whole who will they choose thing, but these days I prefer my favourite couples to settle down happily and have all the same adventures without the romantic angst.
I would love to win a copy of The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker, as I adored Strangely Beautiful. And congrats again on the musical
April 21st, 2010 on 10:19 pm
Another vote for Eve and Roarke from me. I also like Lily and Rule from Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi series, Harper and Tolliver from Charlaine Harris’ Harper Connelly mysteries, Samantha and Rick from Suzanne Enoch’s contemporary series, and many more couples who are recurring characters even though they may not be the focus of subsequent books. Like many others, I enjoy the character development that occurs over many books, as well as being able to catch up with the lives of previous heroes and heroines.
No need to enter me in the contest–I’ve received the books from your wonderful peeps at Dorchester (thanks Chris and Tanya!). Strangely Beautiful was great and I’m really looking forward to reading Darkly Luminous!
April 21st, 2010 on 10:18 pm
Both of these books sound really good. I’d love to be win one.I haven’t read the first one in the series, so that’s the one I’d like to win..
April 21st, 2010 on 10:03 pm
I’ve been wanting to get The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker but have no had a job in a while, and couldn’t afford it, so this is a great chance to get the book. And then, as soon as I get extra money, will have to get the follow-up, as I love to read the further adventures of characters I have already been introduced to.
Plus, since I made a New Year’s resolution to win at least 5 contests a month, and have only won 3 this month so far (and not even that well previous months), I need to win to up my average. Of course, being addicted to reading doesn’t help my money situation when I actually have money.
Thanks for the post

I’m back from speaking with my fellow alums at Miami!
I’m so excited to encounter some fellow Rickman fans here.
And also, as I see in the responses, everyone here is lifting up why I write series fiction with continuing characters and why I love to read it - its the ability to expand and really get to know the characters and see them more dimensionally in more circumstances. Breeding familiarity with characters can be so rewarding in a series.
At the end of book one my hero and heroine finally get together, but we don’t get to see them start a life together. So that’s one of the most important parts of Darkly Luminous, seeing Percy and Alexi not only fall in love but BE and LIVE in love, for better and for worse, and to chart their growth. (Well, there’s all that and then the big spectral war) Hehe.
If you need convincing about the series, I have to squeal, just today I got an amazing and comprehensive set of reviews at True-Blood.net, the original fansite of HBO’s True Blood

I love, LOVED the first book. It was, and still is, so different than what I usually read.
To answer your question, I love connecting books, whether it’s the hero and heroine that star in the multiple books, or the secondary characters that were introduced in one book get their own book. In the world of contemporary romances, I LOVE the Madaris and Westmoreland series (two seperate series) by Brenda Jackson. I also love the Hideaway Series by Rochelle Alers.
I’ve I’m a winner, I would love to have the new release, the Darkly Lumious Fight for Persephone Parker.
And congrats on the musical!
April 21st, 2010 on 8:42 pm
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it when books in a series continue with the same hero and heroine. I truly enjoy feeling so invested in characters. After a few books they become so very real in my own mind. A great example of this is Cat and Bones in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series. After following them for four books, I’m dying to know what happens next!
I’d love to be entered for a copy of The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker!
April 21st, 2010 on 8:26 pm
I like series books with the same hero and heroine too.
I have the first book STRANGELY BEAUTIFUL, so I would love a copy of the new one!
Thanks for the contest!
April 21st, 2010 on 7:11 pm
I actually really like it when books continue on with the same hero and heroine. I love JD Robb’s books, and would love the chance to start reading your series!
April 21st, 2010 on 6:50 pm
I enjoy series where the next book picks up where the last one left off featuring the same couple. Right now I’m reading Changeless by Gail Carriger, and it continues on after the fabulous Soulless. My favorite couple is Cat & Bones from Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series.
I’ve read The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker and enjoyed it very much. I’d love to win a copy of The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker so I could continue the series.
April 21st, 2010 on 6:48 pm
You know, I think the only books I’ve read where it focuses on the same couple was the Twilight series! But I don’t mind it. Actually, I’d like to read more like that. Especially in romance. It would give the relationship more time to develop
I’ve not read this seires! So definitely count me in for the first one, The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker! (Love that name, by the way!)
By the way, Alan Rickman….LOVE HIM!!
April 21st, 2010 on 5:01 pm
I really enjoy when the next book picks up right where the first left off. I always want to know what happens next to the characters I am reading about. Some of my favorite are Eve and Roarke from the In Death series, Cat and Bones from the Night Huntress world, Elena and Clay in the Otherworld books, among others.
I loved the first book so I would want The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker to find out what happens next.
April 21st, 2010 on 4:01 pm
I think when you find a hero and heroine that you really like that it is fun to revisit the characters and find out what is new in their world. I really enjoy reading series books because you get to go back to the same world again and again.
I would love a chance to read The Strangely Beautiful Take of Miss Percy Parker. The characters sound fascinating

How exciting for you to have your book turned into a musical! I adore musical theater and can’t wait to see the final product. Another I adore is series books and revisting characters. I like seeing how a relationship has progressed. And my favorite couple is Sam and Alyssa from Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series.
If I win I’d love The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.
April 21st, 2010 on 3:20 pm
Hi Leanna! *waving* Congrats on your new release and the second book in the adventures of Percy Paker. I am on pins and needles waiting for it’s release. I am so hoping to win a signed copy of The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker! My favorite couples are Bones & Booth, Edward/Bella/Jacob, Amelia Peabody & Emerson, Roarke & Eve, Lizzie Brown and Dimitri and Rizzoli & Isles. Kudos on the musical too! That’s so great!
April 21st, 2010 on 2:59 pm
I love series and the returning to favourite characters. My fav couples include Eve and Roarke (of course)also Lucas and Sascha from Nalini Singh’s series.
I’m a newbie to this series so I would love to win The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker. Thanks!
April 21st, 2010 on 2:43 pm
My favorite couple is Eve Dallas and Roarke from JD Robb’s In Death series.
Would love to have a copy of The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.
April 21st, 2010 on 2:09 pm
My favorite couple is Eve Dallas and Roarke from the In Death series. I could read another 37+ books about them.
I also haven’t read any of your books but do have both on my wishlist. Would love a chance at The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker .
April 21st, 2010 on 1:44 pm
Congrats on the musical! Actually, I can’t quite imagine it so I’ll be on the lookout for that.
Although I have not read your series yet, the idea that your hero looks like Alan Rickman is quite appealing.
I enjoy reading the further adventures of a couple, such as Amanda Quick’s Lavinia Lake and Tobias March. The books extend the HEA or perhaps reveal what happens during the HEA. That’s the appeal of a series, the opportunity to follow the lives of beloved characters.
As I am borrowing the first book from the library, I’d like “The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker” to continue the series.
April 21st, 2010 on 1:27 pm
I like books that continue with the same couples. My favorites to date are Roarke/Eve, Kat/Bones, Alexia Tarrabotti/Lord Woolsley.
I haven’t read your first book yet, so I’d love to start with The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker!
Thanks much!
April 21st, 2010 on 12:49 pm
I like lots of couples who continue in books. My favorite couple is Eve and Roarke from J.D.Robb’s In Death series. I’ve heard great things about your books. If I win, I’d love to start with a copy of Miss Percy Parker. Thanks for visiting.
April 21st, 2010 on 12:32 pm
I have heard a lot of great things about this series and I would love to read it! Put me in for the first book in the series! I love stories that continue, but not sure I have ever read one that continue with the same characters.
April 21st, 2010 on 12:18 pm
Gothic Fantasy Paranormal Romance.. now there’s a sub genre I haven’t tried (but am intruiged about!).
I rather like having (some of) my favorite couples experience new adventures in book 2 or 3. One couple I REALLY liked is Lavinia Lake & Tobias March from Amanda Quick’s novels.
Would love to read: The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.
April 21st, 2010 on 11:41 am
Ever since I first heard of your series I’ve been dying to read more! Alas, I have to be patient and finish my first year of graduate studies before I can start reading for pleasure :/ The good news is that your books top the list of where I plan to start! I would love to begin with ‘The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.’
April 21st, 2010 on 11:41 am
I’ll read a series with the same characters if the drama/tension doesn’t include breaking up/going out with other people, etc. I would rather the relationship grow and have the tension come from outside forces (such as a mystery, adventure, danger). I did read several of the J.D. Robb stories with Eve/Roarke.
I loved the tension of Mulder/Scully, too. Now I enjoy watching Bones and Fringe for the same reason!
My library has the first book, which I’ll check out today, so please put me in the mark me down for The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker in the drawing! Thanks!
April 21st, 2010 on 10:52 am
I’m SO thrilled to see some Alexi and Percy fans in the house! You make my day!!
The Strangely Beautiful characters have been with me for a decade, I began their tale when I was an acting intern at the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company working often 16 hour days on at least 5 different plays at once, and Strangely Beautiful was my mental playground and beloved escape- I’m so honoured to share that world with readers now! I also can’t wait to share how Percy and Alexi continue on and grow, and The Guard too, as that growth is one of my favourite things in series books and in series shows.
Anyone here a Doctor Who fan and simply adored how Rose and the Doctors relationship grew in season one and two of the reinvisioned series? OH I cried so hard in “Doomsday” (just re-watched it the other day and was again a mess) ! I’m also a Mulder / Scully fangirl.
AND I’m ALL about some Jamie Fraser fans in the house here as well…
April 21st, 2010 on 10:34 am
I love it when a book continues on with the same H/h and especially in the same time frame as the last one. For me, the fun in reading is following your favorite characters on their journey. I loved The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker and really look forward to The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker. Congrats on the release!!
April 21st, 2010 on 9:42 am
I don’t mind it when I am in love with them. No, no I don’t dream about Jamie Fraser. Why do you ask? I would love a copy of The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker.
April 21st, 2010 on 9:37 am
Congrats on the book and the musical! I’d love a musical set in the victorian era.
I do like couples that continue in books, though I don’t find that many. I love Jamie and Claire from Outlander.
April 21st, 2010 on 9:33 am
I enjoy a series which continue with a memorable and unforgettable couple whose lives and adventures are ongoing. One that I always look forward to is Valentine Roncalli and her wonderful fiancee Gianluca.
April 21st, 2010 on 9:30 am
I’ve not read to many books were the same couple was the h/H…but I loved Percy and Alexi’s story and I canNOT wait to continue it with “The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker”
April 21st, 2010 on 9:08 am
Brava, Leanna! Kudos for taking the literary world, and soon the musical stage, by storm! Your unique characters and story lines have captured our imaginations! Perhaps a movie version is in the not too distant future : )
If we fall in love with characters, it’s very hard to let them go! That’s why we all have “keeper books” that we read again and again. I can’t say that I have a favorite couple that have appeared in more than one book. I have many fond acquaintances who are characters!
I’d love to be introduced to your hero and heroine in “The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker”.
April 21st, 2010 on 9:03 am
I like being able to follow a couple from one book to the next. These characters become familiar, like old friends that I get to visit every time I pick up a book from their series.
My newest favorites are Alexia Tarabotti and Lord Maccon from Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series. I’m also curious to find out who Jane True will choose in her series from Nicole Peeler.
I very much enjoyed The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker and would love to read The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker!
April 21st, 2010 on 8:42 am
Hello everyone! Hello Sue!
Thanks so much for the opportunity to be here and for your kind words! Re: my long titles, I know, when my agent told me I needed a long, descriptive title and we ran with it, and then we were published with it, we were stuck with the branding!
While I love the long titles, they can be a little hard to come up with (I think the “Darkly Luminous Fight” went through 20 some iterations we’re trying to figure out Books 3 and 4!)
I’m really glad to hear your responses about couples and series, and I like the fact that we’ve got room for all sorts of tastes in this wonderful genre of ours!
I love some of the favourite couples listed, and totally agree!
Lana - I’m so thrilled you found a signed copy when in NYC (I live there) and I LOVE Elizabeth Peters! If I was answering this question about favourite couples, they are it for me too!
I’ll be checking in throughout the day if anyone has specific questions. Thanks for being here and again, thanks Sue for the chance to connect with this wonderful blog and fabulous readers!
April 21st, 2010 on 8:26 am
I like books that continue with the same hero and/or heroine because it gives me a better opportunity to connect with them. One of my favorite couples is Rose and Dimitri from the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
April 21st, 2010 on 8:17 am
Hi Leanna - thanks for blogging today! What always amazes me is your clever, albeit, long titles - luv them! But, sometimes hard to remember
I know you’re taking romance by storm — readers are really enjoying your stories. Congrats on all your success,
Sue
April 21st, 2010 on 5:11 am
I have only read series where they only slightly revisit a past hero and heroine in the next book, but they’re not the focus. But, I love the idea of continuing on with the characters to the next book. It let’s you see past how they met and got together and I love that!
I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve read where I finish the book and I say, but what next!! I want more!
April 23rd, 2010 on 5:06 pm
I forgot to mention, I have not yet read the first book, so I would love a copy of The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker!
April 21st, 2010 on 3:05 am
I love it when an author revisits their previous couples, I like to read on and see what became of them and what has happened with them ever since the end of the previous book.
My favourite couples are Kate Daniels and Curran in Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, Elena and Clay in Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld series, Jamie Campbell and Catrina in Monica McCarty’s Highland Warrior, Sookie Stackhouse and Eric Northman in Charlain Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series.
Since I ahven’t ahd the chance to read this series yet, I’d like to be entered to win a copy of The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker! It sounds wonderful!
Thank you!
April 21st, 2010 on 1:43 am
Some of my favorite books feature recurring couples - I love to watch a relationship grow and continue! My favorite couple is Amelia Peabody & Emerson from Elizabeth Peters’ mysteries (although Ramses and Nefret are pretty wonderful as well).
I was lucky enough to come across an autographed copy of Strangely Beautiful at a Borders while I was visiting NY (I squealed), so I’d love to read The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker!
Also - LOVE the idea of a musical!
April 21st, 2010 on 1:33 am
well, i love Bella swan-Edward Cullen in twilight saga
Ciara Griffin and Shane McAllister in WVMP Radio series by Jeri Smith-Ready.
Since i haven’t read any of your books, i would love to start with : The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker !
