Beyond the Night, Joss Ware
Setting: Post-apocalyptic America
Subgenre: Paranormal Romance
Hero: Elliott Drake
Heroine: Jade
One sentence summary: When Dr. Elliott Drake awakens to find himself in a world where everything he once knew is gone, he teams up with the brave and sexy Jade to fight the immortal beings who now suppress humanity.
Scene you like most and would never cut: I looove the scene in the overgrown, abandoned, long-forgotten shopping mall. Such a fun setting for a zombie fight, and the way my heroes escape from the monsters is quite unique. I also love the scene where Elliott and Jade make love the first time, when she comes in and finds him in a state of devastation. I wouldn’t cut either scene!
Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying: Whatever you say, dear.
Your hero, is he a boxer or brief kind of guy: He’ll take whatever he can salvage! In post-apocalyptic America, you don’t have much choice.
Ancillary character you had the most fun with: Flo, the motherly woman with the heart of a beautician who creates her own makeup.
Your heroine’s favorite hobby: Riding horseback on dangerous missions.
Your hero’s favorite hobby: It was playing basketball, but now he’s not sure what he’s going to do with his life. No hobbies in an overgrown, jungly world!
What you think readers will like best about this book: The unique setting and the juxtaposition of our world (2010) with an almost historical, Old West-type of setting, along with the mystery of who/what/why destroyed the world. Plus, of course, the good, solid romance between a devastated Elliott and the damaged, confused Jade.
The person that readers want you to write about but you haven’t yet: Sebastian Vioget (from the Gardella Vampire Chronicles, writing as Colleen Gleason).
What’s next: Book Two in the Envy Chronicles, Embrace the Night Eternal (February), and Book Three, Abandon the Night (March).
To win a copy of Beyond the Night, make a comment and tell me in what sort of building/structure would you want to make your home in a post-apocalyptic world, and why! I’ll be back to answer questions, comments & pick one winner!

Maybe in an abandoned greenhouse. Hopefully I could start growing some plants.
January 16th, 2010 on 8:39 pm
I’d have to steal some other commenters’ ideas–a bookstore connected to a food court, ideally next to a hospital
But I’d still much rather read about this than live it!
January 16th, 2010 on 12:56 pm
I think I would go for an abandoned hospital. At least you would have medical supplies.
January 15th, 2010 on 3:50 pm
I would try and find a Mall that wasn’t to trashed. Plenty of hiding places from invaders, lots of stuff you need

Hopefully live out an island in the Pacific, that would not be effected, by whatever future turmoil the world would face!
Lived on a island as a child, I believe I could, I could survive. Just one request, an underground bunker to be on the safe side!
January 14th, 2010 on 8:36 pm
an isolated tropical island thanks
January 14th, 2010 on 5:38 pm
I would live more outdoors and enjoy the stars more.
January 13th, 2010 on 3:02 pm
sounds like a great series and I would probably find the biggest tallest tree and build me a tree house that way unless they can fly I would be safe to sleep. If they could fly I would have to rethink that lol.
January 13th, 2010 on 7:57 am
If the post-Apocalypse world is as jungly as yours, I’d live up in the canopy portion of the trees.
January 13th, 2010 on 5:54 am
I think an underground hide-out would be the safest option but I really like the library or bookstore idea.
January 12th, 2010 on 10:14 pm
The highest, least accessible place! Why? to better fight off the zombies of course!
January 12th, 2010 on 10:03 pm
I’d like to live in a place where there still might be some natural resources. Probably in a storm cellar somewhere in an isolated area for security.
Your book sounds awesome Joss! I have it on my “wish list.”
January 12th, 2010 on 7:51 pm
I’m not sure. Maybe….Underground? That might be safest. Or maybe I would just fallow a hot, strong guy around and see where he built his. LOL. Oh, yeah, nothing could go wrong while doing THAT
January 12th, 2010 on 7:47 pm
this new series sound amazing!! will definitely be putting it on my wishlist.
i’d probably live underground beneath a mountain and make a cave-like home. it’ll be camouflaged with vines and trees and it’ll have a hidden spring for water.
January 13th, 2010 on 12:15 am
i forgot to answer why… i chose a cave with running spring so i won’t be thirsty and the cave will offer protection from the elements and also from bad humans.
January 12th, 2010 on 7:33 pm
i really like to live in a up high hills, with at least two secret passages for the entrances to down hills
and i really like the idea of library. a secret library on one of the room on my house ? sounds great !
January 12th, 2010 on 7:32 pm
I like the idea of living underground with tunnels.
Or like Diane M. said…an abandoned military base. Thats gotta have great security.
January 12th, 2010 on 6:30 pm
I’m really excited to start this series, it sounds really great.
I’d either want a home built into a hillside with a spring running through, or a cool treehouse - basically somewhere I could protect my home and me from intruders.
January 12th, 2010 on 5:05 pm
I like the library idea. If its ugly outside at least I can wish myself away with books!
January 12th, 2010 on 4:57 pm
I think a cave with multiple hidden exits for a fast getaway.
January 12th, 2010 on 4:52 pm
I love the library idea. It would be nice if it were connected to a Costco
I read an ARC of Beyond the Night and it was great. Loved the mall scene. Can’t wait for the next one!
January 12th, 2010 on 8:45 pm
Thank you, Ellen! I’m so glad you enjoyed the read! The next book is Simon’s book, and the third one is Quent.
Thanks for coming by today!
January 12th, 2010 on 4:25 pm
I would definitely want to live underground–something like out of that tv show Beauty and the Beast. It would be safe from predators and climate controlled.
January 12th, 2010 on 3:54 pm
OMG I LOVE the library idea! Although I like the idea of a house inside a mountain, something like that. Maybe move the library into it
January 12th, 2010 on 3:24 pm
I would love to live in Iron Mountain, the underground government chambers in Pa. It was once an abandon coal mine that houses all the important documents, with special climate control tempertures that keeps the pages of the documents save. I would throw all of documents out and gather all the books up I could until I filled the caverns up. This place has sleeping quarters, kitchens and everything needed to survive. The only thing I would miss would be the ocean. Maybe by time we would have an apocalyptic disaster, they might have it dug straight to the ocean. I might consider a lighthouse somewhere secluded.
January 12th, 2010 on 8:45 pm
I just heard about Iron Mountain, PA, and have decided I have to have a way to fit it in to the series! It sounds so cool.
Thanks for coming by!
January 12th, 2010 on 3:21 pm
I would want to live in a house at the top of a mountain. Highly defensible, with an underground chamber stocked with food and supplies. It would have a secret tunnel system that allowed me to forage undetected for game and any abandoned supplies in the surrounding area.
January 12th, 2010 on 2:25 pm
In a post-apocalyptic world I’d probably pitch a tent on the most habitable piece of land I could find, to live within the natural lay of the land as much as possible. At that point, I wouldn’t care about material things anyway.
January 12th, 2010 on 2:16 pm
I live in the beautiful mountains of Southwestern Virginia. For all but two years of my life, one in Florida and one in Nevada, I have been able to walk out my door or look out my window and see my mountains. I would pray that those mountains would still be there in a Post-Apocalyptic world, and that’s where I would go.
January 12th, 2010 on 2:06 pm
I think underground sounds good. A former mine that just happens to have an underground warehouse attached.
January 12th, 2010 on 1:57 pm
Hi all! Love the answers. Some of these are great ideas for “getting away” from the destruction!
Thanks again for having me here, Sue! Always such a pleasure to talk with you!

I’d want a huge supply of survival items(food, fuel, etc.) and as many books and family members as I could gather and live on a farm somewhere away from the cities. Maybe with some good caves nearby to fall back to if the craziness that is sure to exist in the cities starts to spread.
Definitely going to have to add this series to my TBB list. Love paranormal and futuristic romance.
January 12th, 2010 on 1:39 pm
There are underground hideaways, caves that run below modern civilizations, why not one of these? Could be interesting things can live where the eye cannot see. Now if only I weren’t so claustrophobic, but in an apocalyptic new world, who knows?

I like the idea of underground living like in the TV show, Beauty and the Beast. A city underground with a community.
January 12th, 2010 on 12:21 pm
Hey Joss - thanks for blogging & doing the interview with us — hope to have it up later today — however, it can be found now at http://www.bordersmedia.com/trueromance

I would like to live in a cottage in the middle of the snowy mountains, cut off the destroyed world, with enough books and food and an internet connection to my friends! *dreaming*
January 12th, 2010 on 11:54 am
I like the other Susan’s answer. The library would be awesome! I’d want food, too, though, so maybe we should make it a fabulous Borders Bookstore with a restaurant. And lots of comfy couches for lounging around. (In my post-apocalyptic world, lounging is acceptable.)
January 12th, 2010 on 12:20 pm
I second that answer!
January 12th, 2010 on 11:14 am
Houseboat that is anchored in a secret Eden, where I could grow stuff on the roof deck, up anchor and drift on the tide, have adventures and McGlady (I’m a girl, not a Gy) my way to success and possibly meet one of Shana Abes dragons or a merperson of interest.
January 12th, 2010 on 10:27 am
Abandoned military base because they have all sorts of stuff there.
January 12th, 2010 on 9:58 am
A library! Plenty of room to roam, and of course plenty to occupy my mind. Unless it turns out like that Twilight Zone with Burgess Meredith (SPOILER!) when he survives a nuclear holocaust…only to break his reading glasses. Although in those circumstances I could still probably survive on the large print collection.
January 12th, 2010 on 9:48 am
Hmm, I agree with the others, I’d want to be undergound.
January 12th, 2010 on 9:12 am
I’m afraid of heights so I’d go for underground. A cave with many secret exits would be great.
January 12th, 2010 on 8:58 am
Maybe a basement. Only 1 or 2 entrance and somewhat safer underground I would think.
January 12th, 2010 on 8:58 am
entrances**
January 12th, 2010 on 4:49 am
I think a mall would be pretty neat but there are too many exits to cover so that would be second choice. If I had to worry about zombies then it would probably be somewhere easily defendable. Maybe underground?
January 12th, 2010 on 1:22 am
I would want to live in a tall building filled with flats because it would be high enough from some danger and gives a nice view!
