What’s Your Favorite Kind of Shifter? & Giveaway!
by sue on Jan.01, 2010, under Book Chat

Is it the furry kind that twinkles your fancy? A lion like in Mane Event? Wolf friends like Dark Slayer? Werebears seen in Bad Moon Rising?
Or do you like the scaly type — Dragons w/ Deborah Cooke & Winter’s Kiss? Katie MaAlister has dragons with color, Me & My Shadow? Naked Dragon with Annette Blair on sale 1/5/2010?
Or do you like totally dark Demon types in Gena Showalter’s sereis, The Darkest Whisper? Or, a total twist with fallen angels in Covet, by JR Ward? Claire Delacroix has her version of angels on the decline with Guardian, are these characters more to your taste?
Or are vamps the thing for you? Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed Series, next installment, Shades of Midnight? Shadowlight by Lynn Viehl continues her ongoing Darkyn series? Or, do you prefer the undead in Mary Janice Davidson’s zanny, Queen Betsy series, Undead & Unworthy?
Obviously, I could go on & on, as there is not a void in the paranormal publishing market! So tell us below, what do you like? Personally, I like them all, but I still gravitate to my all time fav’s, the vampires written by diva’s Christine Feehan & Sherrilyn Kenyon, but, the werewolves are hot on their heels!
One random commenter below will be chosen to receive a pararnomal batch of goodies! (sorry! for US residents only!)
Until tomorrow - happy romance!!

It is good that you took the time to write all this up; it’s great to hear another’s point of view. I appreciate your work on this site, and I’ll come back for more info.
January 3rd, 2010 on 4:35 am
I love the cats–leopards, lions–yummmmmy! Actually, all are delicious, but the cats have been predominate in the books I’ve read lately and I’m hooked I think, lol
January 2nd, 2010 on 11:43 pm
Morio from Yasmine Galenorn’s Otherworld Series, he’s has three different forms. Human. Fox and Demon form which i think is awesome cause he can shift into two different forms.
January 2nd, 2010 on 5:17 pm
I usually like shifters and vampires. My favorite shifters are from Nalini Singh’s books. With vampires, I like a variety including J.R. Ward, Michele Bardsley, and Kerrelyn Sparks.
January 2nd, 2010 on 12:29 pm
All shifters are fascinating in one way or another. I used a Border collie in one of my books because I just thought he’d be fun. And sexy.

I love werewolves, shifters, and vamps. To choose one would be too difficult.
January 2nd, 2010 on 10:59 am
Werewolves and shifters all the way baby! For me vampires are dead in 2010
(pun intended)
January 2nd, 2010 on 6:40 am
I like Lori Handeland’s Night Creatures!
Loved Jacob in Twilight!
January 2nd, 2010 on 2:35 am
ALL Supernatural creatures are OK in my book, but I think vampires (for me) will always be a little higher then all the rest
Love them in Kerrelyn Sparks’ Love at Stakes series, JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed Series, ans Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series. So yeah, I’m a vamp lover
January 2nd, 2010 on 2:03 am
wow! there are sooo many to choose from my favorite is the werewolf Charles Cornick from Patricia Brigg’s Alpha and Omega series ooo ya! But i also love Curran from the kate Daniels series from Ilona Andrew..and all the shifters of the Others series from Christine Warren, and also Kelley Armstrong’s werewolves on Women of the Otherworld series
January 2nd, 2010 on 1:56 am
Ugh, I love shifters…you can’t possibly ask me to choose! Can I just narrow it down to furries, would that be good enough? XD
January 2nd, 2010 on 12:13 am
I love shifters. Especially fond of Nalini Singh’s and Patricia Brigg’s shifters. I love Dragons so would love to try Annette Blair’s upcoming book. What an awesome cover.
January 2nd, 2010 on 12:01 am
Huge fan of anything by Lora Leigh and Shelly Laurenston..love their shifters. BUT, I am a tried and true werewolf fan too!
January 2nd, 2010 on 12:00 am
I’m a fan of big cats…lions, cougars…that sort of thing. Definitely like shifters!!!
January 1st, 2010 on 11:56 pm
I love Shelly Laurenston, cats, dragons, and wolfies. and That is the order of how I like my shifters. Deborah Cooke writes great dragons as does Sherrilyn Kenyon. Well anything SK writes is great.
January 1st, 2010 on 10:32 pm
I’m hooked on all the paranormals, and read way to many para series to pick.. each author has given their chosen species such unique characteristics.. anything is possible.. I don’t know if I could pick a favorite.. maybe a fav. from each catagory, maybe.. If I had to pick what I would want to be it would be a shape shifter.. able to take any form .. what fun that would be.
Hope everyone has had a great Holiday.
January 1st, 2010 on 9:52 pm
I like the shifters that shift into fur, like wolves or big cats. I’m not a fan of anything scaly or slimy!
January 1st, 2010 on 9:43 pm
I love them all, but vampires have always been my favorite. Werewolves are cool too, and any kind of feline shifters.
January 1st, 2010 on 9:19 pm
I’ve been a fan of vamps since I was a kid so I’d say they’re my 1st pick. Some of my favs are Lynn Viehl, Katie MacAlister (both dragons & vamps),Kresley Cole, Charlaine Harris & Sherrilyn Kenyon. Just recently started reading Anya Bast (like the witch books better than the vamps in this instance). I think she’ll prob end up as 1 of my favs too.
January 1st, 2010 on 8:44 pm
My favorite shifters/vampires have been in the Anita Blake novels, but I also love Sherrilyn Kenyon, Nina Bangs, Gena Showalter, and many others.
January 1st, 2010 on 8:40 pm
Whooo. Looks HOT! Count me in!
January 1st, 2010 on 8:24 pm
I like Sherrilyn Kenyon’s idea of shifters. Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!
January 1st, 2010 on 7:59 pm
I like them all, but I am partial to dragons. Just reread Tea with a Black Dragon, which was wonderful. And I’m working on a novel with unusual paranormal types, which is lots of fun.
January 1st, 2010 on 7:50 pm
I will take shifters over vampires any day. I love just about all the animals to. I loved Shelley Laurenston’s last book. I just laughed with that bear. I can still see him playing with his toes.
January 1st, 2010 on 7:40 pm
I enjoy all kinds of Paranormal romance, the funnier the better. Vamps and Cat shifters tend to hit the top of my list. One that I am surprised that no one has mention is Kresley Cole and her multi-species stories, Vamps, Demons, Valkyries, and Shifters Oh My
I have over 80 authors I follow with a couple dozen more that I have only 1 or 2 books of.
January 1st, 2010 on 7:11 pm
Love them all!
I have a soft spot for Bones (Jeaniene Frost’s vampire books) though!
January 1st, 2010 on 5:44 pm
Love them all. A couple of my favorite series: the Breeds by Lora Leigh, Psy/Changeling books by Nalini Singh, and the vampires in Joey W Hill’s series.
January 1st, 2010 on 5:43 pm
I love the highlander vampires in books author by Hannah Howell, lysanie sands,Christine Feehan, and sherrilyn Kenyon. I love next in line is the wolves in books that auhor terri spear.
January 1st, 2010 on 5:25 pm
Hi I like the vampires in the books of authors like Hannah Howell,L.sands,Christine Feehan then comes the wolves like in Terri spear books.
January 1st, 2010 on 4:33 pm
Gotta love those werewolves!
January 1st, 2010 on 4:25 pm
Oh, that is such a hard question. I love all sorts of paranormal reads. I can’t pick just one, vamps, shifters, good demons, angels. You name them and I’ll like them. ;-/
January 1st, 2010 on 4:22 pm
I love vampires! If the book is a good story I will like it. Happy New Year everyone.
January 1st, 2010 on 4:16 pm
I love all sort of paranormal books, but if I have to choose a were I think I would want to be with Laurel K Hamilton Nathaniel’s pack… a were-leopard!
January 1st, 2010 on 4:06 pm
I love them all, but wolves and vampires are my favorite.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:45 pm
I started my adventure into paranormal world with Christine Feehan, Amanda Ashley, Anne Rice and Maggie Shayne. I’m heavy into Sherrilyn Kenyon, JR Ward, Lynn Viehl, Jacquelyn Frank, Lara Adrian, Alexis Morgan, Marjorie M Liu, Rebecca York, Lori Handeland, Angela Knight, Lora Leigh, CT Adams/Cathy Clamp, LL Foster, Adrian Phoenix and others. There are so many still for me to explore in my TBR like Nalini Singh.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:36 pm
I think my favorite paranormal “creatures” will always be vamps, but there are some really great “shifters” out there. The characters that Yasmine Galenorn (Smokey, Morio, Delilah & Zachary), JR Ward (Rhage), Laurell K Hamilton (Richard, Jason, & Nathanial), Charlaine Harris (Sam, Quinn & Alcide) have created are really incredible! There are soooooo many on my TBR list that I haven’t gotten to yet, as well. I just love them all, lol.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:35 pm
I love & read them all but if I would love to ba a cat shifter.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:34 pm
Happy New Year, Sue! I hope you have a great year in 2010 : )
For me it’s a tie between the vamps & the weres. However, I applaud the many, many talented authors who have explored and expanded the paranormal/shifter world! The creativity and imagination with which these wonderful writers weave their tales is fabulous! The love stories are incredible and the action is not for the faint of heart! These authors write for those of us who rooted for Frankenstein and his bride, cheered on King Kong, and longed to be held by the strong, furry arms of Vincent from TV’s Beauty and the Beast! What a world, what a world….
January 1st, 2010 on 3:32 pm
I would like to be a wolf shifter. they run in packs and you have your family with you always. But I really like them all. And I read them all also. I really love Shelly Laurenston’s shifters.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:27 pm
I love them all as well, but those sexy vampires are still number one. Jeaniene Frost’s,Michelle Rowen’s,Lynsay Sands’ and Charlaine Harris’ are favorites. Of course those lovely werewolves and cat shifters are fantastic too - especially Keri Arthur’s, Rachel Vincent’s and Carrie Vaughn’s.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:23 pm
If I were to choose what kind of shifter I would be… I would either choose to be a were-tiger like Quinn or a true shifter like Sam so I could shift into anything I want, for instance a lion! I also think were-panthers are also great shifters. I really enjoy shifters with strength, power and grace. So far I have only read two series with shifters in the story line, one is Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series and the other is the Twilight series! I will be excited to know what other authors include shape shifters in their story lines! They are very interesting characters!
January 1st, 2010 on 3:23 pm
I will take any of the demons from the Lords of the Underworld by Gena Showalter any day of the week! I really can’t say who my favorite is, they are all to die for!
January 1st, 2010 on 3:22 pm
I love Quinn the tiger from the Sookie Stackhouse series, but my all time favorite is Adam the werewolf from the Mercy Thompson series
January 1st, 2010 on 3:20 pm
my two top favs are christine feehans carpathain and any sookie stackhouse
January 1st, 2010 on 3:19 pm
I’d have to go with wolves, but then again I haven’t read any with dragons. They might be fun too!
January 1st, 2010 on 3:16 pm
I love them all, but wolves are my favorite.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:16 pm
Shapeshifter - cats of course. They rule. Nuff said.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:12 pm
My favorite kind of shifter is the carpathians from Feehan’s series, but I have a soft spot for the D’Artigo sisters from Yasmine Galenorn’s world.
January 1st, 2010 on 3:04 pm
I would like to be a shapeshifter like Charlaine Harris’ character Sam from the Sookie Stackhouse Series where I could change into anything I see. That way, I can be a butterfly, a dog, wolf, deer…anything!!!
That would be so much fun, that is until I wake up butt-naked in public somewhere like he does! That would be not to fun then!:-(
January 1st, 2010 on 2:44 pm
While I still love the vamps, shapeshifters are my favorites.(at least for now)
Patty Briggs’ wolves, Ilona Andrews’ big cat Curran and Nalini Singh’s cats and wolves are the ones that I love to read about.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:41 pm
I like wolves and angels. Mainly because the books that I have read have them in the story. I’m new to the genre so I haven’t read quite so many.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:36 pm
I have a soft spot for werewolves & animal shifters. Vampires are ok, too but I’m not keen on demon-angel characters. That’s going a little too far on the dark side for me.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:47 pm
Interesting, there is definitely a split with angels — you either like them or don’t — there is someone in the office that can’t go there either.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:33 pm
Vamps are my favorite…especially ones that can shift. But for Shifters I would have to say the big cats.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:21 pm
I’m a vampaholic and proud to admit it! From Ward’s BDB to Kenyon’s DH to Sookie’s romantic dilemma I’m obsessed with those vamps.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:09 pm
Vamps have always been at the top of my list going all the way back to Anne Rice. I’m about ready to start the third book in the BDB series (love it). Katie MacAlister’s dragons are great and I have a special spot in my heart for Jim, the demon Newfie.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:48 pm
I loved Jim too — what a character!
January 1st, 2010 on 2:06 pm
Big cats! But here are some of my favorites:
Nalini Singh: Changelings; Raphael in Angel’s Blood
Shelley Laurenston/G.A. Aiken: lions, tigers, bears, wolves, dragons
Kresley Cole: Immortals After Dark
Lora Leigh: Breeds
Jacquelyn Frank: Nightwalkers
MJD: Queen Betsy
J.R. Ward: BDB
…and many more
January 1st, 2010 on 2:48 pm
Happy New Year Ellen! You just like them all
January 1st, 2010 on 5:24 pm
Yes, I do :). Happy New Year to you, too!
January 1st, 2010 on 2:00 pm
To borrow a phrase: If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with! I actually love them all, especially at the time I’m reading about one. But my old-time/all-time favorite is vampires. I agree with Sue that Christine Feehan and Sherrilyn Kenyon have great heroes and I’d add Kerrelyn Sparks’ also. Werewolves are second and then the big cats. If I keep at it, I’ll end up naming them all so I’ll stop right now.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:49 pm
OOps forgot Kerrelyn - you’re so right
January 1st, 2010 on 1:32 pm
I love all shifters as long as the author makes it sexy in the story.
January 1st, 2010 on 1:23 pm
For shifters I prefer dragons, bears, or tigers. More unusual than the standard wolf, although I like them too. For vampires, I prefer, again, the different ones like the Carpathians, the Black Daggar Brotherhood, and Lynsay Sands Argeneau series.
January 1st, 2010 on 12:57 pm
I love them all but go toward the werewolves and vampires! It really doesn’t matter that much if the book is well writen!
January 1st, 2010 on 12:52 pm
I like any and all Shifter stories. Lora Leigh and Shelley Laurenston are my current favorites, but will pick up other authors if the story sounds good.
January 1st, 2010 on 12:48 pm
I like them all. Vampires and werewolves usually end up at the top of the list. Happy New Year.
January 1st, 2010 on 12:45 pm
Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series is amazing. One of my all time favorite shifter series.
January 1st, 2010 on 12:35 pm
I love them all but wolves are probably my fave right now.
January 1st, 2010 on 12:33 pm
My absolute fave is dark demon types seen in Gena showalters books
January 1st, 2010 on 2:55 pm
Sabian - Darkest Whisper, rocked
January 1st, 2010 on 12:24 pm
I like them all especially vamps and demons but I absolutely love shifters - especially the big cats. My all time fav has got to be Kenyon’s Katagarian white tiger - Wren Tigarian! So mysterious - so sexy!!
January 1st, 2010 on 2:56 pm
oh yeah, I do like her bear hunters too (or bear shifters or whatever they’re called; )
January 1st, 2010 on 4:35 pm
I’m reading Shelly Laurenston’s (too funny) Mane Squeeze and the hero is a Grizzly and he is awesome.

January 1st, 2010 on 11:25 am
I am new to the paranormal books so would love to get more to read.
January 1st, 2010 on 10:28 am
Interesting that no one has mentioned dark or demon angel types of stories . . . any thoughts there? Ex: Covet; Blood Angel; Guardian?
January 1st, 2010 on 2:07 pm
I love the dark angel variety (love Maljean Brook and Nalini Singh’s books!)
January 1st, 2010 on 3:01 pm
Meljean was the first I read with Demon Angel — then Guardian by Claire Delacroix — I want to read Covet — that looks awesome too
January 1st, 2010 on 10:22 am
I have to admit that Vampires are my favorites, with werewolves coming in a close second. Some of my favorite authors and series are as follows: Sherrilyn Kenyons-Dark-Hunters, Keri Arthurs-Riley Jensen series and Rachel Caines-Morganville vampire series! Paranoraml is my favorite genre to read and I’m always looking for new authors and series!
January 1st, 2010 on 10:27 am
what is the main difference you see in story line when comparing Kenyon to Arthur? just curious as stores merchandise them in two separate genres, Sci Fi & Romance.
January 1st, 2010 on 10:02 am
As far as shifters go, my favorite is the wolf. There is just something about a wolf that gets me every time. (Sorry, no scaly dragons for me.) Vamps are okay, I guess, but I don’t read a book just because it has vamps in it. My favorite paranormal character, though, is the angel. I love angels - even when they’re wicked.
Margay
January 1st, 2010 on 9:59 am
Hard to pick a fav. Probably the weres in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books, at least for sexiness. I also love the cheekiness of MaryJanice Davidson’s vamps and weres.
January 1st, 2010 on 9:58 am
I tend to prefer the vamps myself…the vamp series by Michelle Bardsely, Michelle Rowen, Katie Macalister to name a few…but have been getting more into the shifters lately. Love Shelly Laurenston’s Pride and Pack series and also her Dragon series as GA Aiken. For demons… love the LOTU series by Gena Showalter and Demonica series by Larissa Ione.
January 1st, 2010 on 9:33 am
I guess the vampires are still #1 on my list however, wolves close second . . .Shelly Laurenston’s cat’s like in Mane Event are awesome & I do like Deborah Cooke’s dragons (Winter’s Kiss) . . . Feehan’s Leopard series rocks with Wild Rain, Burning WIld & new in 2010 Wild Fire late April . . I’ve read a few panther’s too & they make great shifters. . . what I WOULD NOT like is snakes, bugs, rodents (ferrets too) and so on.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
January 1st, 2010 on 7:33 am
I absolutely love Katie MacAlister’s dragons! And the werewolves in Patricia Briggs’ Mercy series and Jeaniene Frost’s vampires.
Okay, I love ‘em all!
January 1st, 2010 on 3:33 am
I will agree with Sharon….I’m a fan of wolves and big cats too…they top my list. Yuummmmmyyyy!
January 1st, 2010 on 3:22 am
i’ve read a lot of vampires and werewolves but think i’ll have to go with Nalini Singh’s changelings for my favorite shape shifters. i love both the panthers and the wolves
1 hour 30 minutes till the new year on my corner of the world–i hope everyone had a good one ringing in the new year!
January 1st, 2010 on 2:59 am
I love and read them all but I always go for the vamps and shifters first!
January 1st, 2010 on 2:33 am
I love them all and read them all. But my personal favorites that I will usually end up reading first are vamps and furry shifters. Although dragons and angels and faeries are starting to move up. I just finished Me and My Shadow and it was great. Cant wait for Naked Dragon and of the course the next Queen Betsy novel. But I really need to catch up with Midnight Breed and the Dark Slayers. Hate to leave anyone behind.
January 1st, 2010 on 2:11 am
I’m usually a fan of wolves or big cats…something about that says, “Sexy!”
