Setting: Modern day UK
Subgenre: Paranormal romance
Hero: Isdernus (Ice) Rykard
Heroine: Sabelle Rion
One sentence summary: Their attraction is forbidden…but their love is forever.
Scene you like most and would never cut: There’s a very emotional scene in which the hero and heroine believe they are about to be romantically parted forever by duty and war. In this last goodbye, the mutual tenderness and self-sacrifice for the other’s sake broke my heart as I wrote it. More than a few readers have told me it made them cry.
Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying: “I can’t do it, so I won’t try.”
Your hero, is he a boxer or brief kind of guy: Commando. He’s very no frills.
Ancillary character you had the most fun with: Shock Denzell. That man constantly keeps me guessing what he’s going to do next.
Your heroine’s favorite hobby: Helping others. In the midst of war, danger, and death, she’s willing to give friends and loved ones virtually anything to help keep them safe and alive.
Your hero’s favorite hobby: Staring at Sabelle. He truly is completely in love with her.
What you think readers will like best about this book: I hope it’s the emotional connection between this star-crossed hero and heroine. Also some of the most intriguing paranormal world building I’ve put into this series thus far. And all the Doomsday Brethren themselves. I get a lot of mail about the guys.
The person that readers want you to write about but you haven’t yet: Shock. I get mail about him all the time. I can’t wait to see what that man has up his sleeve when it comes to love.
What’s next: The next book in the Doomsday Brethren series, scheduled to release November 2010, is tentatively titled ENTICE ME AT TWILIGHT. Prior to that, I’ll release another book in my Wicked Lover series (WICKED TIES, DECADENT). For those erotic romance readers who have long awaited Luc’s book, DELICIOUS releases March 2010.
For readers, I’m curious… Your preference: Kickass heroine or girl-next-door and why? For those who comment, they’ll be entered into a drawing to win signed copies of the first two titles in my Doomsday Brethren series, TEMPT ME WITH DARKENSS and SEDUCE ME IN SHADOW.

I love to shag England black girls, but I have noticed that not many do porno.
December 4th, 2009 on 10:57 pm
I prefer kick ass heroine. I like reading books that have a strong female main character that doesn’t have to rely on a man to always keep her safe.
December 4th, 2009 on 10:41 pm
I like the kickass heroine better. She is better able to take care of herself and not need saving all the time. I like strong heroines.
December 4th, 2009 on 3:00 am
I like both but between the two I would prefer the kick ass heroine. I like when heroine can take control, fight and is strong..just like the heroes can be. And yet at same time protective and show their feminine side. This is why I read lot of romance suspense LOL
December 3rd, 2009 on 11:32 pm
I like both but I believe girl next door slightly edges out kick ass, just because it’s easier to relate. But there are those times that I really appreciate a kick ass heroine.
December 3rd, 2009 on 3:17 pm
Hi, Shayla
I like both… girl-next-door, because eh, I think I’m one.
And kick-butt heroine, because that’s what I’d like to be, lol
December 3rd, 2009 on 2:45 pm
I like them both, it depends on the story and often genre. For my paranormals I’d love a kick ass heroine but in my historicals she can be a girl next door.
December 3rd, 2009 on 11:43 am
I think I’d have to go with kick-ass heroine because I like the conflict!! Plus I kind of like putting myself in her shoes and thinking I’m a little kick ass too.
December 3rd, 2009 on 11:24 am
I like a good kick-ass heroine! Not being a mousy girl myself, I can’t stand reading about simpering weak females. I like a girl who can take charge and get things done! As far as a girl next door, that’s okay too as long as she is made of stern stuff. Just please…PLEASE!…don’t make her a weak willed TSTL twit!
December 3rd, 2009 on 10:18 am
Alison and Julie, thanks for your feedback and stopping by!
December 3rd, 2009 on 4:11 am
I like both, so I guess it depends on the story. Some overlap would be nice, too, though: a kick-ass heroine who knows when to ask for help and a girl-next-door fully capable of holding her own.
It’s very fulfilling when a girl-next-door manages to achieve something extraordinary, as it also can be when a kick-ass heroine learns to trust somebody else.
December 3rd, 2009 on 3:08 am
Kickass - because I never could!
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:42 pm
Kara, Thanks for weighing in. I’m super excited about Luc’s story. Only 3 months to go! I hope you enjoy Tempt Me With Darkness. Something about an immortal warrior does it for me.
Amy, hi there! I’m so thrilled that you’re enjoying the series. I love them all too, but Ice holds a special place in my heart. Glad you loved him as well!
Gail, Glad you enjoyed the interview. Shock does have secrets! *rubs hands together with glee* Thanks for stopping in.
Kayla, Average in all ways? Yeah, that doesn’t sound interesting. I do like the idea of a girl who THINKS she’s average but has to find out she’s not.
Donna, great call. I think you’re right!
Vickey, Putting men in their place is a very good cause, admittedly…
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:28 pm
Shayla thanks for the great interview, your book sound awesome. cant wait to read it. thanks for the great oppt! I would have to say i prefer kikass girls! why? Its the way they don’t let anyone push them around, and they always put the men in their place. haha
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:12 pm
Great post, very interesting.
I actually like both types of characters, depending on the story. But on the occasion that one character can be both, I love it. They really need some characteristics of both or I just get annoyed. Too much girl next door can seem whiny and underdeveloped. But too much kick ass heroine can seem unbelievable and unreal.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:05 pm
Kickass heroin, thank you very much. Why? Because I never wanted to be the girl next door, just the average girl with the average looks and average actions. No thank you! Give me some adventure and respect anyday!
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:49 pm
Shayla, great interview:-) Yep, I can’t wait for Shock’s story, I bet he has a lot of secrets to disclose;-)
To answer your question, I’m going to go with the kick ass heroine. She can be tough but still vulnerable and I think the girl next door can always turn into a KAH when needed.
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:39 pm
oops!! should say “girl next DOOR” –duh-lol
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:38 pm
Hey Shayla. I just wanted to say again how much I love this series. It’s one of my fav’s. I adored Marrok and then I thought that Caden was super hot. (I still do) Then not too long ago, I read Possess Me at Midnight. I felt totally, completely in love with Ice. I was so eager for his story, and he did not disappoint me in any way. He’s simply the best. Thanks for the great reads!
Oh, and I love the girl next girl who when in a jam, finds her strength and discovers she can kick butt with the best of them
Thanks Shayla
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:29 pm
I think my preference, if I had to pick one, would be girl next door. Although I really like the combination others have mentioned.
Can’t wait for Luc’s story!
I haven’t started this series yet, but the first one is in my TBR stack. I think after reading the interview, it’s jumped to the top!
Congrats on the success of the series.
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:10 pm
Rosa, You bring up a great point! I like a strong woman…but she can’t be with a beta guy. I cannot read heroes with no alpha side. Male doormats don’t work for me. So if she’s going to be strong, he needs to at least match.
Pam, A few people have suggested a girl next door who can kick ass, so you’re onto something, I think.
Thanks, everyone, for the great comments! Keep them coming!
Forgot to mention… If you’d like to know more about all the warriors in the series, please Meet the Doomsday Brethren at http://doomsdaybrethren.com/meet-brethren/. I had the BEST time writing these descriptions!
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:05 pm
Sue, hi!! Strong but not too strong. Totally. Because even strong women need a break and to be able to allow that tough man to take over every once in a while. Amen!
Sharon, thanks for your honesty! I’ll be posting the first excerpt of Delicious soon on my site. Stay tuned!
Denise, so glad you’re enjoying the series! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I think there is such a thing as kick-ass to the point of annoying. When a female loses touch with her emotions or sexuality, I have a hard time understanding. But maybe it’s me? Confident but approachable is an awesome way to put the perfect heroine, IMO.
Barbara, I hope you pick one out of your TBR stack soon and enjoy it. Confidence is always sexy. Good point. I, too, like the heroine who at least tries to help herself.
Michelle, I know what you mean exactly. You don’t want one who thinks she’s going to single-handedly going to fight an army, yes. That’s TSTL for me, BUT I like writing flawed people who sometimes don’t make great decisions, then have to learn from them. That’s one way characters grow. It’s a balance.
Mariska, If you win, I hope you like the books.
Christine, Bridget Jones is a GREAT example of a flawed heroine learning to be stronger and more independent than she previously was. She’ll never totally have her act together, but it’s so charming to watch her learn and change. I’m a big fan of learning from mistakes.
Chelsea, yep. Too much of any one thing gets dull. You’re right. I hope you’re able to pick up the first in the series. I think they’re awesome fun!
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:55 pm
Quilt, I’m a mood reader too. Totally understand.
Virginia, LOL. Love the description!
Steph, Both is totally okay. Total “Mary Sue” is LOL for me. That’s a great way to put it. No, I wouldn’t want to read her either. I think my heroines tend to be verbally kick ass more than physically. I have a hard to relating to beating someone up or shooting/stabbing someone. I’m not into violence much, which I realize is me… It’s in my books, but not often committed by a female without just cause.
Jeanette, I hear you loud and clear.
Scorpio, Lots of anti-TSTL here. For me, every person is different, so every decision would be different. I give a character latitude. What I hate are the women who keep changing their mind every other scene.
Bonnie, Thank you SO much!!
Cherie, You have an interesting perspective. I’ve been wondering when people would reach their kick-ass threshold. And the problem becomes that, with every subsequent book, the heroines need to be bolder, because you’ve already read a bold heroine in the last book. Where do you draw the line?
Zina, hi! Is it bad to say I’m glad I made you cry? LOL. And Shock…yeah. Always a challenge.
Joder, Several others have felt as you do. I guess a lot of us can’t picture carrying a semi-automatic, wearing our bustier in public and taking down creatures of the night. They look great on covers!
Estella, You are so right!
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:40 pm
Wow, I’m gone for a few hours to write and help with homework and y’all commented!
Crystal, thanks for the opinion and for stopping by.
Lori, LOL. I’m hearing from readers who enjoy the series. You can read more about it at http://www.doomsdaybrethren.com. I agree with you about heroines of the past. Some of the books that have been on my keeper shelf since the 80’s are books I don’t think I’d like now for that very reason. And funny you should mention a female warrior. I’m planning one for this series in the near future!
Karen, I’m gathering that lots of ladies feel as you do. You’re in good company!
Ina, happy to make you sigh. I absolutely adored writing Ice and Sabelle in Possess Me At Midnight. I hope you enjoy. It’s nice to have a strong man…but it’s nice that he knows he has a woman who can rely on herself, if need be.
Hi, Lisa! For me, you’ve hit the right description. A heroine has to be strong, but not be afraid to show her feminine side. It’s when they close that part off that I don’t understand. What’s wrong with not having a penis (can I say that, Sue?) but still knowing your own mind? Nothing!
Maered, I hear you. Trick is, what seems TSTL to one person makes perfect sense to another. We all think differently and come into any situation (or book) with our own perspective. As an author, you simply hope you communicate.
Rosie, Sassy dialogue can be great. I won’t work for every character and every book unless you’re writing comedy. In the world of dark paranormals (like this series) and even my erotic romances, every heroine is different. I’m sort of mentally restless, so I like writing lots of different people. But that sparkling combination, when it works out, is so fun!
Booklover, I tend to be a hero save the day person, too. BUT I’ve recently written some situation in which the heroine had to participate, if not take care of it all. She just HAD to.
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:18 pm
why not both together a girl next door who can kick ass. But if I have to choose then I say kick-ass heroine. Cause I like a women who can take care of herself and the hero if needs be.
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:02 pm
Hmmm…good question. I think I prefer the kick-ass heroine. Mostly because that’s the way I’d like to be! But it’s always nice when she finds a guy who, although he respects her toughness, wants to take care of her anyway.
December 2nd, 2009 on 8:31 pm
For the question– Hmm. I’m going to say both. Its nice to mix it up a bit in different books
Great interview! I loved the answer for hero’s favorite hobby, that was so sweet! I’m really going to have to pick up the first in this series!
December 2nd, 2009 on 8:18 pm
Girl next door, à la Bridget Jones. But I also enjoy the kick-ass heroines or else I wouldn’t be reading UF and/or PR.
December 2nd, 2009 on 7:59 pm
i say, depends on the story and depends on the genre
Shayla, I’m stil new with your works. I do really like to win those books, so i can get to know your works better!
December 2nd, 2009 on 7:53 pm
i’d have to go with a nice balance of both: not too strong that she’s “butch” (sorry, lack of a better word) and not too goody, goody girl next door that she’s perfect. i hate perfect heroines that are too nice and lets the hero walk all over them but i’m also not too fond of “strong, independent” heroines with their quick comebacks to everything the hero says and TSTL actions when they’re trying to prove that they don’t need help
December 2nd, 2009 on 7:27 pm
Nice to see you here Shayla. I have several of your books on my TBR pile, but haven’t had a chance to read them yet. I think I’ll have to read them soon.
I’ll pick the kickass heroine because I love a strong confident character who can take care of herself. I always love it when the heroine is abducted or in danger and instead of waiting for the hero to rescue her, she gets out of the jam by herself.
December 2nd, 2009 on 6:34 pm
Shayla,
This is SUCH a fabulous series! The stories keep getting better and better. Ice and Sabelle’s story is, of course, my favorite. I suppose I’m also like many of your readers in that I CANNOT wait to see what sort of story Shock reveals. That man is an enigma.
DELICIOUS looks to be a titillating read, I can’t wait to see what secrets he’s been hiding.
As for heroines and their traits, I’d have to say kick-ass, although there is such a thing as so kick -ass that she becomes abrasive and annoying. Likewise, she can be so girl-next-door that she’s really boring. If I had my way, I think a mix of the two is the best of both worlds. In that way, she’s not only uber-competent but also incredibly approachable.
Keep up the fabulous work. I seem to devour whatever you write, so no matter what you come out with, it’ll be a good read.
Happy writing!
December 2nd, 2009 on 6:16 pm
Girl next door for me.
And Luc…*drooling* I’m sooo looking forward to that chef!
December 2nd, 2009 on 6:04 pm
I love the fantasy material of a kiss-ass heroine, mostly because it is the polar opposite of me, lol.
December 2nd, 2009 on 5:44 pm
Hi Shayla — a strong heroine is a must these days, but not to strong — like women today we like handing over the reins on occasion -
Thanks for blogging!
December 2nd, 2009 on 5:38 pm
Depends on the story. Some call for a kick ass heroine and some need a girl next door that kicks ass.
December 2nd, 2009 on 4:26 pm
I definitely want to see the kick butt heroine. I want them to give their man a run for their money and make the action more exciting. Besides, if I want girl next door I just have to look in the mirror.
December 2nd, 2009 on 4:14 pm
I didn’t read everyones posts so I may be the only one. I like a girl next door who can kick ass!!!
I loved tha comment Shayla put for hero’s hoby. Ice does stare at Sabelle, and I cried alot too. I also cannot wait for Shock’s story.
Zina
December 2nd, 2009 on 4:01 pm
Girl-next-door because i have been reading so many stories with kickass heroines lately it would be nice to read a different kind of heroine for a change of pace.
December 2nd, 2009 on 3:49 pm
Depends on the story - some stories just need that kick-ass gal and some need that girl-next-door. Each of them have their good points and bad, LOL
Don’t enter me in the drawing though because I have my books already and LOVE THEM!!!!
December 2nd, 2009 on 3:08 pm
Kick-ass heroine everytime unless it’s a girl-next-door with a brain & teeth. Nothing more dull than a girl-next-door type who is TSTL.
December 2nd, 2009 on 3:06 pm
I love the kick-ass heroines who don;t take any crap and get things done. They’re awesome to read about!
December 2nd, 2009 on 2:56 pm
Hmmm, “Kickass heroine or girl-next-door and why?” Can I choose both? Sort of depends on the story but I can say I don’t like the total “Mary Sue”. Too perfect, too wimpy. On the other hand I don’t like the heroine to be such a tough ass that she gets annoying! Maybe a combination of the two. I do enjoy it when the girl-next-door surprises everyone, including herself, and clonks the bad guy over the head or something and saves the day. Mixes a little humor in with the action.
December 2nd, 2009 on 2:07 pm
Kick-Ass Heroine! I am the vanilla girl-next-door type (mostly), so I must live vicariously through those smokin’ hot, bodacious action babes : )
December 2nd, 2009 on 1:48 pm
For me it depends on the mood I am in! Most of the time I go for the kick ass heroine’s but sometime I just want to read about that sweet little girl next door. Most of the time I like my women to be tough.
December 2nd, 2009 on 1:29 pm
I’m definitely more of a girl next door kind of heroine. I like to think that a normal girl will get the hero in the end, and it also gives the character a chance to really overcome adversity and find out strengths she may not know she had…I guess more room for growth. And when it comes to romance I like my heroes to save the day.
December 2nd, 2009 on 1:19 pm
It’s got to be the kick-ass heroines. It’s just my preference. I love to read dialogue that’s sassy and humorous at the same time and most of the time I find that with these types of heroines.
December 2nd, 2009 on 1:00 pm
I love kick-ass heroines who can take care of themselves. But I need them to have a brain, and not act TSTL because they can fight.
December 2nd, 2009 on 12:55 pm
Hi there Shayla!
How’s your day going?
I like a kick-ass heroine; a girl who knows what and who she wants. No mess around girl who isn’t afraid to show her feminine side.
My hero better be rough and tough and a master in the bedroom!!LOL!
December 2nd, 2009 on 12:34 pm
Hi Shayla
*sigh* your one sentence summary made it - your book is now on the top of my wishlist!
since I love alpha males I prefer kick ass heroines - they need a counterpart and I can’t believe that the girl from next door can be this…
have a great day,
Ina
December 2nd, 2009 on 12:29 pm
I definitely prefer a kick ass heroine, possibly because I’m not. My favorite activity, after all, is curling up on a comfy sofa with a cozy afghan, something nice to drink, and something wonderful to read. Physical activity doesn’t appeal to me at all! But I really like the other traits a kick ass heroine possesses such as intelligence and courage and taking-no-guff-from anybody (that is like me). Girl next door is just boring.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:52 am
Oh, I sometimes hate this blog because it costs so much money adding to the TBR pile! And this sounds like a brilliant series.
Regarding heroines: I love them both. When I first started reading romance the heroines were all such doormats, that really turned me off the genre ultimately.
Paranormals (bless ‘em) really brought out the kick-ass and now that’s thankfully seeped into much of romance (hallelujah!). So even the girl next door isn’t so door-matty anymore and sometimes those wonderful women warriors still have a soft side.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:50 am
I like a kick ass heroine. I love to read a book where a woman can take care of herself and her man.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:49 am
Sara, I hope you enjoy. They are fascinating to write, so I hope you fall into the world and love it.
Debra, you are spot on. I like a girl with pluck and gumption, but when she starts sleeping with a matched set of Glocks under her pillow, I have a hard time relating. I like the idea of celebrating strong femininity without having to make my heroines behave like men.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:47 am
PJ, LOL. That a great description!
Calila, I find it depends on the genre for me, too. Sometimes even my mood.
Kirsten, I’ve often suspected it was a case of being attracted to what you aren’t. I tend not to be shy or remotely hot-house, so I’m sometimes fascinated by the girl next door. But I love a woman who can kick ass too.
Pat, I love the snappy banter, too. When you get the right characters, it’s magic!
Caridad, thanks much! I enjoy your work, btw.
Armenia, exactly!
GSM, Scarlet was so interesting… Strong one minute and strategically weepy the next. She had manipulation down, but you always wanted her to succeed. Good observation.
Billi Jean, the girl next door who suddenly realizes she can kick ass is always compelling. So agree.
Jennifer, Right. And who doesn’t love a hot Alpha?
Laurie, thank you SO much! I’m thrilled you’re enjoying the series. That scene made me cry, too. Shock is…well, Shock. Every book in this series is a surprise to me when he walks on.
Amanda, I like a girl who takes care of herself, too. Get annoyed every time I’m forced to watch Snow White. I keep wanting to shake her and tell her to get it together. LOL!
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:39 am
It all depends on the book. I like a kick ass heroine, but I don’t want her over the top. I still want her to be a women. But, I also love the girl this next door. I guess that is why I enjoy reading so much. I get to choose what I want to read.
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:38 am
This sounds like a great series and another list of books to add the TBR pile!
I think I prefer the girl-next-door heroine that eventually finds they can be Kickass when the situation calls for it.
Great Post!!
December 2nd, 2009 on 11:14 am
I read and enjoy both types, but if I had to choose I choose kick ass heroine. I really like how a girl can take care of herself and make the man work for it.
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:49 am
This series is so amazing and the scene you’d Never Cut - made me cry - The emotion was so spot on. And yeah Shock will be a total MUST read I just can’t wait for him, but then again I love them all!!!
Yay!!! on Luc’s book - I can hardly stand the wait for it.
So Heroine - Love the mix of both. I want the girl next door to surprise everyone and be kick ass. Kind of how Sabelle is in PMAM.
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:40 am
i too really loved them both but it depends greatly on the hero , if hes very alpha i want my girl to stand up to him.
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:33 am
I like kick ass heroines — I think I like them because, well there are enough stories out there about the woman needing saving. Although, now that I write that, I also like the girl next door who suddenly realizes how tough she really is! So, sorry, no help!!!
best
billi jean
December 2nd, 2009 on 10:24 am
I do read both, but I guess I’ve preferred the kickass heroine ever since I read Gone With the Wind–and cheered on Scarlett O’Hara–in the sixth grade.
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:58 am
It depends on the story and what mood I’m in. Really I like them both.
December 2nd, 2009 on 9:41 am
Inside I’m the girl next door which is why I love to read and write about Kick Ass heroines. The book sounds great. Another one to add to the TBR.
December 2nd, 2009 on 7:33 am
I cannot choose; I like both. Depends what type of mood I am in. Sometimes I like the snappy banter between h/h and sometimes I like the girl next door.
Pat L.
December 2nd, 2009 on 4:34 am
Since I’m always considered to be a bit of the girl next door I love to read about kick ass heroines. I sometimes, ok let’s be honest. I often wonder what it would be like to be one of those. And reading about them gives me a taste of that which I enjoy very much.
December 2nd, 2009 on 3:03 am
For me type of heroine depends on the type of story.
If its a paranormal/thriller/mystery I vote for a kick ass heroine who isnt afraid to handle things herself.
If its a historical/comtemporary I can go for a girl next door type.
December 2nd, 2009 on 2:25 am
I’m leaning towards kick ass heroine. I love a book where the guy has to grovel and cover his “jewels” around the women he wants…lol! I like reading about a woman who is tough and can take care of her self but also melts when she finds her HEA. But I also like the girl next door ones once in a while too.
