Guest Author, Anthea Lawson & Giveaway!
by sue on Nov.17, 2009, under Book Chat
Anthea Lawson is the pseudonym of a husband-wife team writing spicy Victorian romance. Their second novel, ALL HE DESIRES, has just been released. Their debut novel, PASSIONATE, was nominated for a Best First Book RITA in 2009. Visit their website, http://www.anthealawson.com for all their latest news (and to find out how they manage to happily write romance novels together)!
ALL HE DESIRES – Anthea Lawson
Setting: early Victorian
Subgenre: Historical
Hero: Alex Trentham
Heroine: Caroline Huntington
One sentence summary: A self-exiled doctor with a mysterious past meets the one woman who can break through his isolation and bring him out of the shadows and into the light.
Scene you like most and would never cut: The hero and heroine are trapped in a place where it’s pitch black. Fearing that this is their last opportunity, they know they must pack a lifetime of love and desire into their time together. It was an excellent challenge to write without using the sense of sight, and setting this scene in absolute darkness ended up giving it a lot of emotion—and heat.
Thing your heroine would never be caught dead doing/saying: “Certainly dear, whatever you say.” She is a woman who knows her own mind and follows her dreams.
Your hero, is he a boxer or brief kind of guy: In Victorian times briefs were not an option. The stretchy elastic that puts the tighty in the whities wasn’t available. Alex would wear “drawers” –or nothing at all.
Ancillary character you had the most fun with: We enjoy our villains and the terrible things they get to do and say. Cousin Reggie is such a plotter. Trouble always springs up in his footsteps.
Your heroine’s favorite hobby: Teasing the dour doctor whose care she has fallen under, and swimming with him in the Mediterranean in scandalously inadequate clothing.
Your hero’s favorite hobby: At the start of ALL HE DESIRES, his favorite hobby would be walking alone on the upland trails of Crete and staring moodily in the direction of England, the home to which he can never return.
What you think readers will like best about this book: The chemistry between the heroine and the hero and the way love finally compels him to piece his life back together and confront his past.
The person that readers want you to write about but you haven’t yet: The hero and heroine of the next book we are working on, of course! We are really excited about our newest project and can’t wait to share it with our readers.
Thanks for having us here at Border’s True Romance! To celebrate the release of ALL HE DESIRES, we’ll be giving away a copy of the book, plus a copy of our RITA-nominated debut, PASSIONATE, to one lucky commenter. But if you don’t win here, you have more chances – check out our November blog tour listings on our website www.anthealawson.com.

My first thought was “Heathcliffe” in Wuthering Heights. I have to admit I just watched the original black and white verion again recently so that may have pushed him to the top of the list.
November 20th, 2009 on 7:51 pm
Tough to say which brooding hero is my fave…perhaps Rolfe de Warrenne from the Brenda Joyce series.
November 19th, 2009 on 11:58 pm
I’ve heard great things about this book and I’d love to win this one!!
November 19th, 2009 on 5:54 am
Takashi O’Brien a killer turned hero in Anne Stuart’s book Ice Blue!
Also, Steve,”Frankenstein” cop on the run in Karen Robard’s wonderful book Walking After Midnight.
November 18th, 2009 on 8:37 pm
I can’t decide my favourite brooding hero - there are too many!
I do love a romance set in the Victorian period though - I don’t think there’s enough of them out there.
November 18th, 2009 on 9:12 am
I was going to say Heathcliff because that is first that comes to mind but I have to 100% agree about Darcy. He is my favorite.
November 18th, 2009 on 1:39 am
Oh wow! Brooding heroes… hmm, they’re all so fantastic it’s hard to choose. I think my favorite right now is Barrons from Karen Moning’s Fever series–although, it’s hard to know if he technically falls within the brooding heroes because of his actions, lol.
November 17th, 2009 on 10:45 pm
So many fabulously brooding characters but really, does anyone work the brood better then Mr. Darcy? Me thinks not!
November 17th, 2009 on 10:01 pm
I am late chiming in, but couldn’t resist listing my favorite brooding hero. He’s from a book by Laura Kinsale called The Shadow and the Star. Samuel Girard is abused as a child and taught the art of fighting, Japanese style. He’s painfully quiet, scarred by his past, yet alpha male strong and protective of his heroine.
I also very much enjoyed Alex Trentham and Caroline Huntington in All He Desires, Anthea. What wonderful visions you depict. I can SEE Crete. And I LOVE how Alex can not resist Caroline. The tension felt real and kept me turning page after page. Thanks for an excellent read!
November 17th, 2009 on 7:52 pm
Why, Darcy of course!
November 17th, 2009 on 6:54 pm
No one broods like Heathcliffe! But I prefer my heroes funny or charming, rather than brooding.
Your pitch-black love scene sounds intriguing!
November 17th, 2009 on 6:39 pm
This sounds like a great read! I guess my favorite hero of all times would have to be Rhett Butler, he may not have seemed all that brooding but deep down he was! So I am going why back in time.
November 17th, 2009 on 5:03 pm
I love me a Highlander hero and so I have to pick KMM’s Dark Highlander brooding hero, Daegus MacKeltar.
Looking forward to reading ALL HE DESIRES.
November 17th, 2009 on 5:03 pm
I like Sir Sir Alistair Munroe from Elizabeth Hoyt’s To Beguile a Beast!
November 17th, 2009 on 4:52 pm
I think one of my favs is Diana Palmer’s Cash Greer. I loved it any time he showed up in a book. I was happy when he got his own book. But, there are so many others that I like. This book sounds real good I am goin ghave to check it out.
November 17th, 2009 on 10:07 pm
good call Debra — Diana has some great hero’s & I totally agree that Cash was one.
November 17th, 2009 on 4:37 pm
I would have to say Eric from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse Series. He’s a Bad*** most of the time, but he went to rescue Sookie in Dallas in her second book. He broods over everything but deeply wants Sookie.
November 17th, 2009 on 4:28 pm
Has to be Heathcliffe from Wuthering Heights.
Congrats on your new release!
November 17th, 2009 on 4:09 pm
Oh I have to second Mason from Beloved Vampire and Dr. Charles Cornick from the Alpha and Omega series! Usually I don’t like the brooding type - too often they come across as whiny - but for Mason and Charles I will make an exception.
November 17th, 2009 on 3:57 pm
Hello! No one is more scarred or brooding than the Phantom himself, so my number one brooder is The Phantom of the Opera. I actually discovered two brooding heroes this year who each lost an eye and fingers and were greatly scarred. Alistair Munroe from to “Beguile a Beast” by Elizabeth Hoyt, and Luke Morgan from “Healing Luke” by Beth Cornelison. Love those guys! By the by, I think redeeming the “dour doctor” would be devine : )
November 17th, 2009 on 3:54 pm
My would be Charles Cornick from the Alpha and Omega series by Patricia Briggs. He can be my brooding hero any day.
November 17th, 2009 on 2:39 pm
My favorite brooding hero would have to be Mason in Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill
November 17th, 2009 on 2:19 pm
These sound really interesting!
November 17th, 2009 on 2:10 pm
Hi Sue & Anthea~
Hmmm . . . brooding hero . . . being a medieval-lovin’ girl, I am still stuck on Edmund from Marsha Canham’s IN THE SHADOW OF MIDNIGHT.
Congrats on your new release! The cover is gorgeous, and I will be purchasing it today, when I take a car-load of kindergartners on quick trip to the bookstore, before we make our raucous, rowdy way home . . . Wish me luck.
November 17th, 2009 on 2:07 pm
Anthea — thanks for being here & sorry about the bio - if you want to send it my why we’ll include asap!
Hope all is well for you & it is hard to choose a favorite brooding hero — however, Simon Blackwell from THE SECRET PASSION OF SIMON BLACKWELL, Samantha James certainly is one of them http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=0060896450

Chance from Linda Howard’s book A Game Of Chance was one of my favorites too. I love her MacKenzie books.
November 17th, 2009 on 1:27 pm
My favorite brooding hero is Dain because Loretta Chase does a fantastic job of making his reasons for brooding so clear. I don’t like moody men in general, but if I can see how vulnerable they are then it’s much better.
On a side note, I’m really intrigued by a husband and wife writing team! Especially since my husband HATES romance novels (we’ve swapped books this week, and he’s hating life right now).
November 17th, 2009 on 2:22 pm
Ooh so many brooding heroes to enjoy! Katrina, good luck with the book swap! Surely there’s a romance out there your husband would like…
November 17th, 2009 on 1:16 pm
I love a good brooding alpha male. Christina Dodd’s William from Candle in the Window is a favorite. I just started Lara Adrian’s Kiss of Crimson and Dante is shaping up to be quite the hot brooding male. *grin*
November 17th, 2009 on 1:04 pm
Mr Darcy off course!
November 17th, 2009 on 12:51 pm
Thanks for having us here at the True Romance blog! For some reason our bio didn’t get in the post - for those of us who have not yet met Anthea Lawson, we’re a husband-wife author team who loves writing romance together. If you’d like to know more about how that works, we have a lot of fun interviews up at our website - anthealawson.com.
Keep those comments coming - ’tis the season for brooding heroes!
November 17th, 2009 on 2:08 pm
eeegads — my mistake — please email & I’ll fix
November 17th, 2009 on 12:33 pm
brooding hero– Sir Alistair Monroe from to Beguile a Beast.
I can’t wait to read ALL HE DESIRES!
November 17th, 2009 on 2:09 pm
Oh yeah, good one, but aren’t all of Elizabeth Hoyt’s?
November 17th, 2009 on 11:37 am
Wow, that’s a tough one. So many brooding heroes to choose from. Chance MacKenzie from Linda Howard’s A Game of Chance was a “man of action” but he was always brooding about something — guilt, his parentage, how he was tricking Sunny — on and on! Great book though. And sadly the LAST MacKenzie book.
November 17th, 2009 on 2:28 pm
Don’t miss the reissue next week http://bit.ly/28qAWe
Did you read ICE? LOVE her heroes
November 17th, 2009 on 11:36 am
I would have to say Simon Bassett from Julia Quinn’s _The Duke and I_.
November 17th, 2009 on 10:28 am
I like Maxim de Winter from Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca.” Your book sounds wonderful. Thanks for visiting today.
November 17th, 2009 on 9:21 am
Lord Winter from Laura Kinsale’s THE DREAM HUNTER is my favorite brooder.
Kinsale wrote Winter with such stoic intensity that his brood-iness did not feel like mere affectation but total, honest loneliness & despair.
November 17th, 2009 on 2:29 pm
Don’t miss Laura’s new release, Lessons in French out in Jan http://bit.ly/2zVRiE
November 17th, 2009 on 9:20 am
I think I’ll go old school and say its Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre….maybe Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights….heck maybe even Beast from Beauty and The Beast. I can’t pick so you get three choices from me. LOL
November 17th, 2009 on 7:26 am
Rome Matthews from Sarah’s Child by Linda Howard.
November 17th, 2009 on 4:06 am
Congrats on the new release. One of my favorite brooding heroes is Robert Knight from Gaelen Foley’s “The Duke.”
November 17th, 2009 on 2:31 pm
LUV her hero’s — Gaelen has a way with her men — what about Rotherstone http://bit.ly/32xmMN My Wicked Marquess - yum!
November 17th, 2009 on 2:40 pm
Sue, I haven’t read “My Wicked Marquess” yet. Now I can’t wait to meet Rotherstone.
November 17th, 2009 on 3:36 am
Sounds a fascinating read, especially the scene in the dark! I’d love to win a copy.
