Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!

by sue on Nov.09, 2009, under Book Chat

katie Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!Hello, Borders readers! I’m tickled three shades of pink to be here, discussing my very most favorite thing in the world: dishy guys. Well, OK, technically, I’m here to talk about my newest release, Me and My Shadow, but since that book is just chock full of dishy guys, I figure I’ll just do the two birds and one stone thing and make everyone happy.59414030 a Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!

For those of you who are new to my books, Me and My Shadow is the third book in my silver dragons series, which you probably guessed is a paranormal romance. Dragons, in my books, are beings who mostly run around in human form—extremely dishy human form—but they are most definitely not human.

The hero of the silver dragon series, Gabriel Tauhou, looks a whole heck of a lot like Jason Mamoa, but with silver eyes. I used to think of Gabriel as a kinder, gentler dragon—especially when compared to the hero of the first dragon series, Drake Vireo—but after seeing him in action defending his much beloved mate May Northcott, I’ve revised that idea. Gabriel may look like a nice guy, but he is most definitely a dragon; he defends what’s his, and doesn’t take crap from anyone. And that, to me, is what’s so appealing about him; he may be as handsome as sin, but it’s his heart that has me melting into puddles of Katie goo. He’s unswerving in his loyalty, has a wicked sense of humor, and will do whatever it takes to protect those he loves.

I also used to think that May, the heroine of the series, was about as different from Aisling Grey as she could be, and yet there are traits the two of them share: neither one is content to sit around and allow the men to make everything right for them, both believe in taking charge of a situation rather than avoiding it, and like the dragons, they also try their best to protect their loved ones. It goes without saying that both May and Aisling also find the dragon men arrogant, unyielding at times, and hotter than the dragon fire that simmers beneath the surface.

If I have one favorite scene in Me and My Shadow—and to be honest, there are several that even now make me giggle—it would be the scene with Magoth in the forest. Magoth is a demon lord, and yes, he’s also a dishy guy, but a very bad dishy guy. I think it’s because he’s the epitome of a bad boy (how much worse than a demon lord can you get, after all?) that I love him so very much. In a way, he’s an antihero, very much concerned with himself, but with a passionate interest in everything that goes on around him. He also knows to a very fine point his attraction to women, and isn’t above using that to get what he wants. I keep promising myself to give Magoth a book of his own some day, but until then, I made do with allowing him free rein during a couple of scenes.

Like many readers, when I read a series, I wait with anticipation for characters from previous books to make their appearance. The same thing applies when I’m writing—and it’s for that reason that I have included, and will continue to include, characters from the Aisling Grey series into the silver dragon books. Drake, Aisling, Rene, Nora are all there, and I greatly enjoyed seeing them through May’s eyes. Jim was also there, because it couldn’t be a dragon book without Jim the demon dog, now could it? I think Aisling fans would rise up en masse and smite me if I tried to get away with a Jimless book, but that’s OK, because I’m as fond of the hairy little demon as everyone else. I couldn’t resist one thing with this book, though—I wanted to see Jim in human form. I let him have a brief scene in that shape just to satisfy my own desire, but had to change him back because he was kicking up a fuss about what his Welsh Corgi girlfriend would say.57634186 a Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!

While I’m on the dishy guy kick, let me mention the hero of my next book, Steamed (February 2010). I’m wildly excited about this book, not just because it’s steampunk and full of adventure and airships and aether, but mostly because the hero, Jack, is a new kind of dishy guy. He’s not arrogant and pushy like the dragons, in fact, he’s pretty much the opposite: he’s a Quaker, and doesn’t believe in lethal force. That doesn’t mean he’s a pushover, however. He’s fiercely protective of Octavia, the heroine, is a swashbuckler at heart, and despite suddenly finding himself ripped out of our world and dropped into a steampunk version, is absolutely in his element rescuing damsels, fighting the bad guys, and cutting a big swath as an airship pirate. All that, and madly in love with the heroine. Could you ask for more in a hero? I couldn’t. Just thinking about Jack makes me smile.57963721 a Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!60122664 a Guest Author, Katie MacAlister with Giveaway!

The last dishy guy I want to mention is another bad boy, this one from the dragon series. The dread wyvern Baltic makes several appearances in the silver dragon books, and will be given his own series starting with Love in the Time of Dragons (May 2010). When I told readers that Baltic would be given his own series, many of them shook their respective heads at the idea—like Magoth, Baltic is a bad boy, set on his own course, and apparently without consideration of what anyone else thinks. But I believe that by the end of Me and My Shadow readers can see that there are some extenuating circumstances, and that redemption for Baltic isn’t quite so impossible as it may have seemed.

Here’s my question for all of you: what sort of dishy guys do you prefer as a hero? Do you like the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human? Or do you prefer a guy with his feet on the ground, who is much more of this world? Or perhaps something in between?

I’ll take a mixture of both qualities!

  • Biki

I adore the guy who is self assured and knows how to pursue a girl correctly! So it’s a bit of a mix between the otherworldly and definitely here

  • Cybercliper

In my fantasy world - the sexy, arrogant, smoldering dragon. In the real world, I’ll take smart with feet on the ground guy every time.

  • jmspettoli

I can’t really say what kind of guy i prefer but all i know is that there is a different kind of guy for every occasion (whether they are completely human or not… LOL).

  • Scott Troth

He has a moustashe & Gotee, a Mohawk, a scar that runs across his forehead and thru his right eye, his left eye is black, his right eye is white from the scar, a projects an aura of menace that can scare a solders fighting a war into heading for the hills. And when he gets annoyed he get a nervous tic in his face that turns his face into snarls that can silence a stadium during the world seriees. And when he meets his soulmate, she will take one look at him and concider him a big cuddly teddy bear, and lavish him with baby words.

  • Diane M.

I like the sexy smoldering dragons.

  • Cathy Sipprell

I like both types of heroes (and heroines), depending on my mood at the time. There are times when I need that extra little bit of otherworldly, or that extra dose of reality to help me remember men are only human :)
Thanks, Katie, for giving me the flexibility to choose!

  • Rebecca

Tough choice. Can we have sexy, smoldering and earthy? ;)

  • Julie

I find heroes who are a bit “other” (or completely otherworldly works, too) absolutely fascinating. :D

  • Julianna F.

Books Should have hot, sexy, loyal heros. One of my favorite books was Hard Day’s Knight. The hero,Walker MacPhail was all sexy, hard bodied male. Not a vamp or a dragon. Feet on the ground? I doubt it as the guy did make his living on the RENFEST circuit. I really enjoyed all that I learned from that book. Who knew people actually lived on a RENFEST circuit. All your books are GREAT! Just give me humor and a dishy guy.

  • Sarah W

Sexy and smoldering works for me!

  • Sara Dee

Sexy and smoldering is always good…works for me! ;)

  • Stephanie Jumper

I love someone inbetween… they seem normal, but deep down are NOT. Kinda like the Dark Ones… technically the dragons too since they stay in human form most of the time…

  • Raelena

I definitely have to go with sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human

  • Sara Dee

Definitely sexy and smoldering is magic for me! ;) Love the arrogant dragon men.

  • Michelle S.

I’ll go with the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human. He seems the more interesting sort.

  • Barbara Elness

I’ll go with the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human. He’d be sure to keep my interest, I’d never get bored.

  • Kimberley

I love a guy who grows into the relationship. I.e. he tries to change to make the relationship work. Like Drake, who knew he was arrogant and pigheaded and yet he still attempted to change a little bit because Aisling asked him to. I love that.

  • Allison Gambini

I absolutely, positively prefer the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human because the heroines you write ground them with their sense of humor & infuriating (to them) rules & different take on life! The give & take makes it way more fun to read & the sex, smoldering part never hurts, right? ;)

  • Tiffany Forbes

I love the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human. I think there has not been a hero in a Katie MacAlister book that I not loved. :)

  • Tiffany Forbes

I love the sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human. I love the way they think they want one kind of woman and end up with one that stands up for herself. I have to say I think I have loved every hero in every Katie MacAlister book.

  • Donna A

Give me a guy with a sense of humor any day of the week. If he is hot so much the better.

  • Jeanette Juan

I like the dishy guys in between who have the best of both the dragon and the man!

  • Phyllis Adelle Sherer

I prefer the sexy, smoldering dragons :)

  • chey

    It depends on the story.

  • Diana Stewart

I love the arrogant dragons and enjoy reading about heroes who aren’t quite human as well as about heroes who are hardly human at all, at least at the beginning of their relationship with the heroine. I agree that the couple is what counts. The tension, both positive and negative, between the hero and heroine while their relationship develops is important. What I most enjoy is seeing how the author gets the couple from a shaky relationship start to a happily ever after, (or at least to a happy at that moment!)
I want to add that you are one of my very favorite authors. I love your sense of humor.

  • Van P.

I would perfer the guy to be in between, to keep things fun and interesting. :]

  • Melody

Well Gabriel Tauhou is what I like in my guys. I love to read the silver dragon books because I get excited about him and what he will do next. I think I look for that type guy in all the books that I read. Its a fanticy guy for me.

  • Deneishia

Sexy and Arrogant. I like how they melt and obey for the right mate. It makes me tingle all happy when they get put in their place by their loves and no one else could do that to them. I love that.

  • SonomaLass

What matters to me is not the hero, but the couple. I need to believe that they can be happy together, that they bring out the best in each other, and that they can live and love better together than apart. With some arrogant heroes, I find that either the heroine is a doormat, which means that being with him will not bring out her full potential, or that because she is his equal, they clash and fight all the time, which is not my idea of a long-term happy situation. Neither of those works for me.

  • Linda Henderson

I kind of like a mixture of both. Who doesn’t like a bad boy with a tortured soul. But on the other hand it’s nice to have someone who is reliable and that you can depend on. And HOT doesn’t hurt either.

  • helen

Me I prefer the ordinary guy as the hero, someone who does not have it all (wealth looks etc) but has that certain something that makes ordinary extrodinary.

  • sue

Hi Katie — glad you could join the blog today — Congrats on making Borders Top 10, ME & MY SHADOW was #7 - woo hoo!

I think I like the inbetween hero — too arrogant & I’ll want to slap him, & not in a kinky way either :)

    All the best!

  • sarah

your books were some of the first paranormal romance i started with - and still are some of my favorite reads! thanks!!

  • Lisa B

    Hi Katie.

I have to say that Paen Scott is the ideal hero for me. He has his feet planted but he is also a little arrogant and very sexy. So I guess its a little of both for me.

  • peg monaghan

got to say that i like the dragon guys :) yeah, they can come on strong, but they are such great lovers and protectors. and the fire they make with their mates is so hot!!!!

  • Katy Campbell

    Hi Katie!

I love the sexy smoldering otherworldy guys, because they’re so different than what you get in normal romance books. They also seems much more mysterious (and sexy!) which keeps things unpredictuble and interesting. I love all of your books though, so I’ve got to admit dishy guys are awesome, no matter what form they come in!

    Katy

  • Teri R. (Llama)

Yum! I like men very alpha but with a bit of mush in them. I love Drake!! Someday I want a book where Magoth falls and falls hard for a woman and she kicks his butt and whips him into shape.

  • LBDDiaries

I like my hubby who is sexy and smoldering with a huge touch of arrogance who also has his feet on the ground. He’d die to protect me and I know it.

  • Ina

    Hi Katie :D
some years ago I loved stories about the “ordinary” guy, but today there is something missing - they have to be “more” - something special, not from this world, just more than the guy from the neighborhood… so yeah, I really like sexy, smoldering dragons, with a touch of arrogance and something that’s not quite human ;) honestly - I can’t get enough of them! and so it comes that my bookshelf is full of your books because they have the special extras!
    Wish you all the best!
    Ina

  • Kimberly

In 2004 I borrowed The Corset Diaries from my sister. She never got it back. I read Katie’s contemporaries and historicals, then discovered Dark Ones, then the Dragons. Better and better! Among my favorite men? Walker McPhail, Iain MacLaren, Noble Britton, Gabriel Taihou, Alrik Sigurdsson, and Dane Hearne. They’re hunky, confident, flawed and appreciate women that are “skinny-challanged” sarcastic and determined.

Thanks, Katie, for great women that we can relate to and the men who love them! Can’t wait for Steamed!

  • jodi th

I love a bossy arrogant man, dragon, wolf, vamp, whomever. But he has to want me for me. Love me for all my failures, warts and frogs. A man who can slay all my… well he cant slay dragons or demons…hmm how about my roaches? And spiders! But yet let me spoil me as well. So def a bit of both. Arrogance yet able to help me when I need it.

  • Jim Duncan

Have to admit, dishy is not too high up on my list. I like the troubled hero, who has confidence in himself but is more at a loss when it comes to relationships. I want him to struggle, not so much with wanting the heroine, but with just how the relationship with her will work. There needs to be as much internal conflict as external, with his own personal demons providing as big an obstacle as anything else. I want to have to smack him upside the head for being a bit clueless about the heroine, but not so much that I don’t want to root for him to get the girl. His appeal should be more on the subtle side, not so much in drop-dead looks, but in where it counts the most.

  • Rebecca Elliott

It is all situational. Fully developed characters with defined sex appeal work for me. But tall is a must. Oh and nice biceps. Hmm. Cute butt is good. Great chest…Oh, a brain.

  • Dana T

I have always enjoyed the sexy smoldering dragons in your books. They try to be perfect but are thwarted so often by your heroines. It’s fun to watch them interact with such strongwilled women and accept them as they are.

A guy whose feet on the ground is great as well and is usually more flexible allowing for a lot of adventures to happen.

Can I have both? All of the above? I’ve always loved your books and heroes Katie! Thanks so much for the work that you do!

  • Margaret A. Golla

Oh, boy! I like a little of both. Smoldering, sexy, not quite human makes everything a little more interesting.

    • lauren

Hi Katie, congrats on another book!

Great question - Although I love reading about both, I prefer the Dragon types. I’ve also been rereading some of the vamp books - Gotta love Christian!!

Can’t wait to read the new book!!

  • Jen

Wow! That’s a tough question! I guess I would have to say both. While the arrogance of the dragons may get a little frustrating at times (”Just kiss her and get it over with!”), that arrogance can come in handy when defending those they love. Then again, it is also nice to have a guy who doesn’t have (too much of) a problem admitting when he was wrong.

Either way, as long as the guy is loyal, willing to protect those he loves, with a bit of “tough guy” thrown in to show he’s no pushover, and dishy, definitely dishy, he’s my kind of hero!

Thank you Katie for giving me such really great reads!!

  • Tisa Tester

    Hi Katie!

I have to admit, I like ‘em both - but I think a guy with both feet on the ground is particularly attractive. Not that there’s anything wrong with an occasional splattering of dark arrogance mixed in. Om nom nom.

    Cheers!

  • Chelsea Sieradzki

I would say I just have to learn towards the slight arrogant, but a sexy smoldering dragon type lol I would have to say Drake is my favorite but at the same time he would get frustrating at times lol

  • Quilt Lady

I believe I love the guy thats in between. I little of each works for me. It make the hero more interesting.

  • Jackie Burris

Thanks for the lovely blog today Katie, it is very interesting and informative.
Either or will do just fine as long as I am the only woman that holds the mans attention and affections both types work for me. I love all the books but am like you Katie in the area where it is so fun fun fun to come out and play with the “Bad Boys” because they keep us amused and coming back for more book after book.
When can we expect a drawing for an ARC of “Me and My Shadow”? I have ordered from Borders but would love to win a signed copy. Either book from this drawing is an appetizer as have both but am patiently waiting for the arrival of my copy of Me and My Shadow in the mail and now have another to look forward to with the book in May 2010 about Baltic, yeah more on my To Buy Pile list…

  • PJ Keitzman

BOTH!!! But I really enjoy a guy who gets swept up by the heroine. He can be a tough guy with a bad past she has to help heal or he has to heal her past, whichever works for me. If the writer is good any type of guy works for me.

  • Elizabeth Driscoll Landgraf

I have really enjoyed all of your leading men, they all have their own “dishy” to them, and are not stereotypical of each other. I love that each one is his own man, not the same character as before with a different name.

Then there is Jim, maybe he needs a before he was doggie story, with some sort of waiting for his love to return and save him from demon twist. But not to soon, love having Jim sniffing around.

  • Sandi Sookoo

Hey Katie! To me, any hero that makes a girl’s heart flutter is all right :-) Depends on what my mood is at time. I like humor and arrogance is dishy too. Sigh. So many heroes, so little time…

  • Lory A

My ideal hero has a little somthing extra in the out of this world catagory. But he may not realize the extent of his hotness, but arrogant none the less. WOW! That is a little hard to explain.

  • Jennifer Cochran

I really like the tough bad boy type. With the hot bodies. I am really a dark ones fan. I also like for the guys to also have a sensitive side.

  • StephS

I’m still working my way through the Aisling Grey books but the Dragons are on my radar!
I cannot wait for Steamed to come out! Jack sounds like my kind of hero - a down to earth engineer. It was sheer genius on your part to make the hero an engineer! Sexy AND they can fix damn near anything! :-)

  • Tiffani

I prefer the hot, sexy smoldering, slightly arrogant man, but the one who isn’t afraid of his own feelings. Own them, they are yours.

But there is something to be said about a man who has his feet on the ground and isn’t afraid of his feelings and doesn’t mind being a little bossy and arrogant if the need arises. ;)

  • Cassie Lake

As a long time Katie fan I love a story about a smoldering, arrogant hero. But I personally have a thing with men who keep their feet on the ground. I don’t care if my hero is human or not, just as long as there’s humanity in his personality. :) <3 much love and I’ll be reading her books as long as she keeps writing them.

  • Peggy

It’s all about the HOT, smoldering bad boy YUMMY !!!
Human or not it doesn’t matter in fact it usually is even better that way ;)

  • P.G. Leja

Your Dragon guys hit the spot. I have read most of your books but have yet to venture into the Silver Dragon series.
What happens when I have read all your books and there is nothing more to read for awhile.. :)

A dishy guy needs to be smart, strong, have a job and have a driving ambition. Plus a sexy voice does not go astray. Oh and he cannot live with his mother BLAH!

  • Lisa G

Hi Katie! I am tall, dark, sexy with a secret there. Not a bad secret but something with finding out. I want a book with a challenge for both the hero and heroine. I want a book I can’t put down that is a page turner!

  • Kellelle

I like both; I think it largely depends on the heroine. Some women can’t handle heroes who are too wounded or arrogant. Some women are so rational themselves, that they need a little bit of the smolder to balance them out and bring them some excitement. My common thread is that they have to be protective (but not smothering) and loving (also without the smothering). Thanks, Katie, for all the enjoyable reading hours you’ve given me.

  • Sara T

I prefer the dark, brooding hero- the wounded one, who is too arrogant to admit it. He has to be sexy, of course (!) a tad cocky, but with the ability to be incredibly sweet with a great sense of humor if you know him well enough to be let inside!

  • Virginia C

I definitely prefer the “wounded hero”. Whether they are human, dragon, immortal, or a combination, I like them to be scarred and smouldering. They make the sparks fly (especially the dragons)!

  • Julie J

Since I just started reading my first Aisling Grey book, You Slay Me, about an hour ago, I am not familiar with your dishy heroes, but I’d say I tend to go for the sexy, smoldering guy with a touch of arrogance. I think I can go with the not quite human part, too.

Our family has had Newfoundland dogs for years; this is what initially drew me to the series and I’m liking the book so far. Now if I could just set aside the housework and get back to the book…

  • Jeanne

Hi Katie, I’ve had the dark, sexy, smoldering guy with a touch of arrogance. That was my EX-husband. I really prefer a guy with his feet on the ground, someone who is so smart it is sexy and that puts away his hobbies to spend time with me… oh, and add younger and Swedish. That’s my husband now. :-) Yes… that combo is just perfect.

  • Carol Luciano

You’re a new to me Author Katie and your Dragon books are now in MTR list. I am looking forward to reading them.
I love, dark, smoldering and arrogant. :) Wherever he has has feet. :)

  • Wendy

Why choose? I like the sexy, smoldering dishy guys with a touch of arrogance but also with their feet on the ground and able to think rationally! Roawwwr! ;)

  • GSM

    Katie–
Your books are new to me and I can see my TBR list growing. As for the questions on heroes…choices, choices! I think when the author has a compelling story and all-around interesting characters, all those hero choices can work well.

  • Deb H.

I usually don’t like the dark, arrogant heroes. I tend to lean toward the quiet, courteous, good-sense-of-humor, sexy hero. I sometimes like the hero that doesn’t seem quite 100% human. Melissa Mayhue’s faery heroes are really sexy and quite likeable, too.

  • Sori

I really like human guys in my romance novels, but occasionally a well written para will catch my attention.

  • RStewie

My favorite dishy guy is full of angst while, at the same time, completely honest with himself about his feelings for the heroine. I get tired of men in Romance that look down on Love and Relationships, so it’s great (to me) when they are the one that’s in pursuit, and not just for a little slap and tickle on the side.

I DO like them to be a little bigger than life, though!

  • Scorpio M.

I tend to favor the quiet, still-waters-run-deep, kind of hero. I guess these would be more Beta as opposed to Alpha. Not to say that I don’t appreciate a great might Alpha male.

In the “not quite human” catagory the hero must be written with good dose of humanity like the Bill Compton-gentleman vampire-character from the Sookie Stackhouse books…I love Bill, fangs and all.

  • Caitie

    Hi Katie,
I’m a little behind on your newer releases, but I have really enjoyed many of your books:)
In terms of heroes, I’d say it depends on the moment…sometimes that smoldering, arrogant alpha works for me and others, I just want a sweeter, more in touch guy.

  • Pat L.

I like both with feet on ground or a touch of arrogance - but do like the hero to be human.

    Pat L.

  • Kirsten

Something in between. I love a sexy, smoldering guy with his feet still on the ground, did I say sexy already?. I guess it’s okay if he’s not quite human as long as it not so much that I can’t relate to him.

  • Mariska

i’m new with your work Katie and i enjoyed the post!
for the question, i’d prefer sexy, with the touch of arrogance. it doesn’t matter for me whether the hero is not quite human or a human.
i love to to have the chance to read one of your works!

  • victoria r

i would prefer a hero sexy, smoldering with a touch of arrogance…that way the relationship stays interesting. :)
