Sherlock Holmes vs. Captain Kirk
by morgan on Dec.09, 2009, under John Joseph Adams
OK, so Sherlock Holmes has outwitted Gandalf. Score one for the master detective.
Now he’s met his match. For round 2: “Who has more luck with the ladies, Sherlock Holmes or Captain Kirk?”

District 9, Star Trek
by morgan on Aug.11, 2009, under Karen Miller
Hey Karen,
If you could play in any franchise, is there a dream project lurking out there for you? Craving a shot at Halo, Warcraft or Hello Kitty?
I want to see what writers do next with Star Trek. The film raised the bar and reset the mythology. So what happens next in the books? How do you take that new spirit of adventure and mystery and inject it into the novels?
Also, District 9 looks fantastic! That looks like a story perfect for spin-off novels. Of course, I say that because the trailers are brilliant. I haven’t seen the film yet. Is anybody else lining up to see this one on day 1?
5 times???
by morgan on Jul.07, 2009, under Robert J. Sawyer
I feel like my geek cred is slipping because I’ve only seen Star Trek twice. C’mon there’s got to be somebody out there who can top Rob. How many times have you seen the new Trek?
Near-future SF is the cutting edge! Forecasting 21,000 AD is more fantasy than realistic SF exploration. Sure, you can set a space opera then, but it lacks the punch that comes with grounding the speculative in the famliar (ala the Matrix or Blade Runner). I’m enchanted by the wild divergence in technical and cultural possibilities in the next 50 years. The range of variance in 10,000 years is staggering.
The science doesn’t matter. Sorry, Rob. Story trumps science. All that research has been in vain. Think of all those hours wasted in the library. OK, somebody tell me why I’m wrong, please! I want to believe in science.
When is too much of a good thing a bad thing?

David W. commented that Terminator struggled partly because of “Sci-Fi overload” after Wolverine and Star Trek. That’s crazy talk! (I say with a smile). It’s hard to get burnt out on great movies, no matter the genre.
Is there a breaking point? If so, how many sci-fi movies is too many? My thought is that we still don’t have enough.
Robots vs. cyborgs
by morgan on May.26, 2009, under Kim Harrison
Josh & Matt are calling out Transformers 2 as a contender. It has the action and effects to stand out. If it brings the same humor and heart as the first one, it’s got a chance.
P.S. I added a link to an excerpt of Kim’s new Once Dead Twice Shy to the page. Check it out!
Where’s Christian Bale’s Dark Knight mojo?
by morgan on May.26, 2009, under Kim Harrison
My pre-season pick for summer blockbuster champion was Terminator. Anybody else out there eating crow this morning? Bale and his cyborn pals didn’t even win the weekend.
Our next topic is Summer Movies, and our featured contributor is Kim Harrison.

Kim here, and I’m thrilled to be a part of the beginning of this author/reader interaction on Borders that I hope is going to be fun. I’m going to get things started (I’m not even sure if this is live yet) with today’s topic: Hottest summer movie. My money is on Star Trek, but if I like a movie, it’s usually delegated to “also-ran.”
Okay, I’ll admit I was in line for the opening of Star Trek. I loved it from both a OMG-they-made-a-good-one to a more nuts-and-bolts aspect where they can now rewrite the entire saga because of that clever little alternate history they put in there. I’m putting my money on Spock being the one to carry the sequels. Dude, he’s going to be the lose cannon, and I can’t wait to see his sexual exploits. They are going to be worse that the original Kirk’s.
Terminator . . . I’ve heard rumors. Anyone seen it yet?
