Upcoming projects!

Morgan, thank you so much for inviting me, and Claudia for joining me! It’s been heaps of fun, and I hope entertaining for all of you out there. If you’re interested in hearing more, follow me on twitter and on livejournal for updates! ♥
In addition to the beautiful Temeraire omnibus that is out now, and Tongues of Serpents, which will be coming out July 13, I am currently finishing up an incredibly fun manga project with the super-talented Yishan Li: Liberty Vocational, about the adventures of the somewhat-hapless Leah Taymore, a new student at a vocational school for superheroes.
It has been very much a learning experience, writing a graphic novel — the hardest part is trying not to pile ten times the possible story into each frame, leaving room for the art to breathe and tell the story with you.
I also have another project in the works, a YA trilogy loosely inspired by the Secret Garden, which I’ll be starting work on this February; I don’t have a date on that one yet, but am wildly excited about the concept.
I currently also have several other short stories out and forthcoming besides Araminta and Purity Test: Vici, in The Dragon Book (I recommend checking out the very spiffy UK publisher’s site, which is full of fantastic content and among other things a video of me reading the first part of the story), is set in the Temeraire universe and is the story of the taming of the first dragon in Western Europe, featuring a rather well known historical figure. *g*
I’m also very proud of Seven Years From Home, in the upcoming anthology Warriors also from Gardner Dozois, with George R. R. Martin, which will be out in March 2010, and further out, the story Priced To Sell in Ellen Datlow’s Naked City anthology coming in winter 2011, for which I don’t have a link yet but which is full of new stories of urban fantasy.
And for Temeraire fans, I am happy to report we have a new deal with Del Rey for three more books in the series, which will bring it to a close — I have felt for a while that it seemed like there were going to be nine volumes total, and while writing Tongues of Serpents, the general outline of seven through nine fell into my head, which was v exciting. (This happened at a cafe in Sydney while doing research, which was especially lovely. Am especially excited about the Incas. \o/ )
Thank you all again!

Kyaaa!! The fabled manga project~!! XD Naomi-sama, it looks SO COOL–can’t wait to check it out when it hits bookstores~~ Do you have any idea when it will be released? Amazon doesn’t seem to have it listed yet. =\ Glad you went with Del Rey, though—their books are always quality stuff. ^^
And since this is your last Babel Clash, I have to hurry up and comment on your fantastic Araminta story—so many kinds of awesome!! Not just the smart, plucky heroine, the swashbuckling nauticalness, and the WAY-too-entertaining genderf*cking
(seriously, when “Aramin” decided to boldly plunge forward where no woman had gone before, you surprised me as much as you surprised Weedle! LOL!! TOO much fun~ XD)
But more seriously—that ending… It was really a surprise, but an incredibly satisfyingly one, and I think I’ve finally figured out why. In a way, Araminta’s progress in this story is kind of the life/fan cycle of all non-“Bella Swan” women out there (i.e. non-Mary Sues)… I think most every girl starts out enjoying stories about Mary Sue characters who are helpless, brainless and always rescued by the manly hero at every turn. But at some point, those of us who have the desire to rise above “helpmate” or “arm candy” status, who want to use our intelligence/strength/creativity to do something more than find a big, strong alpha male to take care of us, are faced with the same problems that face Araminta.
We don’t want the girly route a la her arranged marriage proposal, so many of us embrace the slash/yaoi path since the ukes (or semes, lol) are more like ourselves in personality/ambition/etc, so at least we can identify with them a little better than we could with the damsels in distress. And while it’s fun for a long while (always is~), at some point, we all feel the desire to shine and star and find love AS WOMEN, just like Araminta. I love that at the end, she was able to achieve her dream and was willing to ditch/dominate even manly-man Weedle for it. It was a less sentimental ending than I was expecting (thus the surprise), but the truth is, how could Araminta REALLY fall in love, etc, until her partner sees, knows and accepts her for who she really is? I realize that now and am glad (with small, lingering, yaoi-loving regrets) that you ended her convenient yaoi relationship and let her shine in her own light.
Well, sorry for the long, babbling review, but I wanted to let you know how thought-provoking and entertaining it was for me. ^^ Hmm, maybe I should’ve posted this on your lj, huh? Will do…

It’s been lovely reading your posts here Naomi, and you, too, Claudia!
I’m glad to hear there’s going to be three more books in your Temeraire series, Naomi–I’ve still got time to spend with Laurence and sweet Temeraire.
Also: manga and a YA trilogy? You’re amazing! I can’t wait for everything now. Thank you so much for taking the time to have a conversation with your fans.
