avatar1 AvatarI enjoyed Avatar, and I’m excited about what its success will mean for Science Fiction.  I’m optimistic that it will inspire other studios to support quality, big budget science fiction pics , and not just ones attached to familiar brands such as Star Wars and Star Trek.

The ability to create such an authentic and vivid alien landscape and draw the audience into it will create more demand than ever for new worlds.  I’m excited to see how Hollywood further integrates this new technology but also realistic enough to know that not every director will be capable of keeping pace with Cameron.

Patrick, do you consider your new novel, the Breach, to be cinematic?  Would it be a good fit for the big screen, and is that something that you envision?

While it’s not a book, it really merits a mention given the week’s topic, and given that tens of millions of people have experienced it during this same week, myself included. I think I’m safely within the majority of novelists who’d do a backward somersault if someone decided to make a film version of one of their books. Obviously I’m a little biased as to whether The Breach would be a good movie. I could kick myself for cutting the subplot...

“I’m optimistic that it will inspire other studios to support quality, big budget science fiction pics…”

Remove “quality” from that sentence and I’d agree.

I think Avatar will inspire more big-budget science fiction movies, both good and bad. The big budget part is important, since sci-fi movies tend to require big budgets. Bigger budgets often mean better actors, better effects, better production, and hopefully better scripts. Regardless of whether you personally liked Avatar, its success will probably affect the industry in a good way overall for us sci-fi fans.
