Honestly, to me the vampires are almost irrelevant. I have to remind myself they're in there. It's a novel about a man struggling against the biggest possible loneliness, the most palpable existential despair imaginable. I put myself in Neville's position and think what it would take just to maintain under those circumstances, and it just kills me. I don't think that novel has been out of print in 40, 50 years, and I think that bravery, that maintaining, is the reason why.

Great pick with I Am Legend. Regardless of genre, it is one of the absolute must-reads of American lit. Too bold? The only vampire tale to rival it is Dracula.

Adam-- I totally agree, and even though I actually liked the recent Will Smith film (I highly recommend watching the alternate-ending version on DVD; it redeems it moreso than the theatrical ending), and have a guilty weakness for The Omega Man, nothing has come close to the Matheson novel's nightmarish power. I'll talk about the films a bit in a few days!

I am Legend is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. It's a pity none of the film adaptations have done it justice. I did like the most recent one, but I hated the last 20 minutes or so. Before that, though, it was pretty good.
