Once Dead, Twice Shy. Who is Madison Avery?

Has everyone had a chance to check out Kim’s new book?
This is how I sneakily steer the conversation away from one of my own childhood fears, one that is embarrassing. I was chased by a giant rooster. I kid you not. A gigantic, scary and mean rooster. It still haunts me.

When you consider a chicken is potentially just a little mini dinosaur and when you’re little they reach up to your waist, being scared of them starts to sound like a pretty good idea.

This may sound strange, but I’m afraid of being afraid. I work very hard not to put myself in situations where I feel afraid; I’m afraid the feeling will make me spin out of control and be stuck there forever.

That’s not strange. That’s a great observation. Fear of fear is probably a fairly common phenomenon. I experience that sometimes, too.

You’re not alone, Morgan. We had a rooster that lived down the road from us when we were kids. I swear the thing stood as tall as I was. What was so sad was that I was afraid to go past it to go fishing. It was a good day when they killed the beast. –Kim

My rooster story happened when I was about four, visiting my grandparents in the country. I had to go pick up the doll dishes outside before the rain came, and met the big old mean rooster coming back in. He flew at me (trying to scratch my eyes?) and ended up scratching my forehead, so I know how scared anyone can be of a rooster. My grandfather killed the rooster after that. He (rooster) had also been intimidating my mother when she hung out laundry or anyone else outside.
