“29 Gifts” guest author blog

by David on January 15th, 2010

hello fellow givers. sorry I have been so quiet, I have been on vacation for the last week (hmmm…a gift to myself??? LOL) and I need to catch up on my notes. I did want to share with you a blog from the 29 Gifts author Cami Walker. I found it inspiring as I try to find new ways to give.

Enjoy.

Scarcity Vs Abundance by Cami Walker

Common responses I hear when I invite people to join the 29-Day Giving Challenge and commit to give their gifts are: “I’m too busy. There’s too much on my plate already. I can’t add one more thing to my daily ‘TO DO’ list.” This is what I call living in a scarcity mind set and it’s exactly the thought process that giving 29 Gifts in 29 days is designed to overcome.

The intention of this project is to help people become more conscious and learn to celebrate the gifts they already give every day. That book you read to your little girl last night before bed; that’s a gift. The dinner you whipped up the other evening for your next door neighbor; yep, that’s a gift too. Showing up to work without complaining and doing your job well; you guessed it, it’s a gift. It all “counts.”

It’s hard for people to believe that they actually don’t have to add ANYTHING to their daily to do list to successfully complete the 29 Day Giving Challenge. All that’s needed is a shift in perception so you’re mindful of the gifts you offer to the world. This helps you recognize the abundance in your life and encourages you (and others through you) to be both grateful and generous in your daily experiences.

Good giving today.

Dude.. did you give anymore gifts or realize you already give gifts? Get on the ball with this resolution, yo! My gift to you today is accountability.

I guess part of the process is getting stuck, eh? My gift for the day was being flexible about the timing of music class so others could attend another event. Easy peasey.

Okay… I’ve been coming back to participate every day (yesterday’s gift was info for articles to another person). I had higher hopes of this blog, but feel that it has been given over to the promotion of “the book” with the work being done by the authors and the people who sign in. No one is perfect and blogging is not for everyone, but Im discontinuing following this blog. If the paid leader can’t be bothered to check in, then I’m taking my contributions and interest elsewhere. Borders, if you start a project like this, make sure there’s good follow up and kindly have your employees participate. A couple of these blogs have devolved into promotions for the books by guest bloggers who are flogging their books. Good but not what I was looking for. I’m going over to the $300 resolution blog now and if it too has devolved in the same way - I’ll pretty much leave the same message and take my giving and saving ideas elsewhere.

    To Kathy B. in OR,
Sorry for your disillusionment with this blog, but please don’t let that cause you to lose sight of the real purpose of the book - Unselfish giving and finding ways to serve others. If following the true nature of the book, maybe trying to encourage followers and even the “paid leader” and authors, to do the best they can and to simply keep giving and contribute to the blog when time allows, would help inspire them.
I can appreciate the fact you feel you aren’t encountering something vital for you personally from this blog, and of course, you have a right to quit following it and take your contributons elsewhere but please remember–
Always be kinder than necessary, everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
The entire publishing industry, including Borders Group Inc., are struggling, and with recent lay-offs, there are many very stressful forces at work here.
Positive feedback and encouraging folks to keep giving are always welcoming feelings.
In the meantime, my best wishes are with you to find a blog that allows you the experience you are looking for, and to please keep giving, please keep sending positive thoughts and please spread all the love and as much goodwill as possible.
All that said, if I was truly following the intentions of universal laws, those of love and peace, I really shouldn’t even be responding to this entry in such a manner, but please understand, many folks involved with this blog, are under EXTREME intense pressures.
    Peace be with you always.
    Namaste
